Black Fireproof Paint

Please can someone recommend a brand of paint, not an aerosol, to paint the black surround on our insert fire? Tried one of the specialist aerosols from Bricomarche in the Summer but, now that our fire has been on, have found it's peeling, hence the request for a non aerosol type!

Hi Anna - I bought this stuff a few years ago for an old fire of ours and it worked fine. YOu can either rub it on with a cloth or brush it on. The only problem - I cannot recall where I bought it from. I THINK it was Castorama or Leroy Merlin and that would be in Poitiers but I'm sure its widely enough stocked. Its the creme polish.

I don't think that you can still buy zebra grate polish, or even Cardinal Red for the window sills and floors, my grandmother told me about them[:D]

Hi Thanks for your replies. I'm sorry, I don't think I've explained very well. I think this product would be like a polish. What I need is actually something to paint on around the fire glass around the outside of the insert fire. It's to paint on to metal but don't want an aerosal as, as I said, it peeled off.

If you need a paint try a car accessory shop. You can get high temperature black paint for painting enginey things

They do sell fire black in France and I shuffled off in my slippers to find my French pot of the stuff but couldn't.

It took ages to find and I only finally got it when the French Canadian manager of a hardware store understood my description of the stuff.

If you really want paint there are very high heat resistant paints available to spray exhaust pipes - but in my experience they do not last long,

I would have thought that some know-it-all here would know what it's called in French as I have a selective memory and I didn't concider it necessary to remember.

        Black lead ..... it`s called  Zeebart  or Zeebrite  depends on who makes it  brico`s have it    it comes in a tooth paste tube  you just brush it on with a shoe brush and polish off

We use Barbecue paint on our black motorcycle exhausts.

Black lead, Zebo etc are graphite suspensions in liquid (Colloidal) and do not produce genuine blacks, more very dark greys.

Brico's do sell tins of VHT paint up to 600c but they are twice the price of the UK versions, some are also lower temp at 300-450 degrees but probably still enough and wll give proper black if that is what you want.

Hi Anna, we have bought black paint suitable for barbeques or fires and used it on the outside of our woodburner to renovate it. We got it at one of the bricos (Mr Bricolage I think) and it is in the section of the spray cans etc but was painted on. It says on the tin it is suitable up to 250 degs. C.
