joidevie
Apart from looking (with a torch!), what are the best ways of assessing if a beam is good or bad.. I shall be viewing a closed up house soon and I will not have a huge amount of time.. I'm after a 'quick' initial assessment, not one that will determine a 'buy or not' decision..Many thanks.. LangeHaas
Poke it with a key! It should not be soft. Or bang it with your fist and see if there is sawdust coming out of the woodworm-holes (which are probably there :) ).
Dog
Stick a screw driver in it. If it goes in more than 10% of the diameter of the beam start to worry.
