The first post asked 'is this normal'?

The answer is undoubtedly yes, it is normal practice in France for a tradesman to supply materials and fittings. Mostly for reasons of guarantees and TVA. Whether or not some people, mostly non-French, want to do it differently, and whatever their reasons, or whether they think the guarantees worth having or the TVA worth saving, is a side issue. Actual experiences show that some do better one way, some the other.

Two things here - the plumber will potentially be able to source items more cheaply (and retain his commission from the supplier or not as the case may be) - this happens often in the UK now, too. One other thing not mentioned - if you should wish to sell the property, only items purchased by the tradesperson as evidenced on his invoice, are allowable against the Capital Gain - items you have purchased yourself are not at present allowable by the Notaire. PB

Yes but the labour element of the tradesman's facture - frequently the larger part - IS allowable.

I do not agree, we have sold a house and the cost of tiles which we bought and then used a tiler to lay were fully allowed for CGT.
