Necessity for Architect

I think I have read something, perhaps on this forum, that it is obligatory to involve an architect in certain types of building projects in France.  I could search through and try and find something, but on the basis that things change from time to time, I think it more prudent to ask a specific question.

Subject to planning, we are considering creating a single storey apartment from an old pig-shed (68.5 m2) and incoporating an adjoining derelict dwelling (some walls standing, that's all) 51.0 m2.  The floor area when finished will be 120 m2 approx.

Would we need an architect and, if so, what is his/her required involvement?

Well, I've read some of the stuff on Permis de Construire (just google it), including the form itself. As far as I can see, if it's a separate building, then there's no requirement (provided the living space doesn't exceed the 170m2).

Someone else will doubtless be able to confirm or correct this, but as always, check it out with your Mairie.
