Whether you'll have any near you is another matter. If you're in a village or small town you could ask around if anyone has a bit of land they'll rent you. Rural France seems to be full of odd little plots where the land has been subdivided over the generations. Maybe have a stroll round and see if there's a patch that looks overgrown and doesn't seem to belong to the houses adjoining.
