[quote user="NormanH"]There is nothing new in the present exchange rate.
It is more or less the same as when I came here.
There has been a atypical period in which the pound has been ridiculously over-valued.
In any case it makes no difference to people who live and work in France, only to those who depend on UK pensions or savings.
Perhaps it will be the opportunity to have a good clear out.

Surely those who depend on UK pensions or savings are bringing money into France and spending it there, hence making a net contribution to the French economy, do you want that contribution to end? If so, why?

To amplify, my understanding was that in some places newcomers are welcomed with open arms as it kept communities viable and all that goes with it - shops, tradespeople etc.

 Hi,

I think NormanH is being deliberately provocative to have a bit of a laugh at those who react strongly to his post. The best way to deal with this sort of humour, if it upsets you , is to ignore it .Personnally as a p**s-taker myself  it doesn't bother me.

Bit of a naive comment Parsnips. I also enjoy a bit of a windup like most people. The muppet concerned is not in that game whatsoever. The comments he posted to the two threads genuinely seeking advice (since removed) were both rude, upsetting to the OP and personal.

There is a line, and he crossed it.

Not to mention all the French working in the UK who will be sending money home or bringing it with them when they return. here are many ways that the Brits contribute to the French economy both directly and indirectly. What about all these old derelict houses the Brits buy, renovate and then pay Tax Froncier and Habitation on. Puts money in both the national and local economy. As the Mayor of Limoux said when he reopened the car park which was once just mud and now is tarmaced and landscaped "If it were not for the British moving here and contributing to the local economy we couldn't have afforded to do it".

Anyway in keeping with the original post I am pleased to see the exchange rate gradually creeping back up again.

It is a very sad day for me at least to be a little relieved to see it at 1.18 but after Osbourn's comments over the weekend I thought it would plummet even more. It is certainly causing us to have a rethink on everything at the moment. [:(]

" From now on the pound abroad is worth 14% or so less in terms of other curriencies .It does not mean of course that the pound in your pocket...or purse...or in your bank has been devalued ......This will enable Britain to break out from the straight jacket of boom and bust economics ".......The words of the Prime Minister...19th November 1967....Harold Wilson ..I remember being worried in case I was searched at the airport when I went on holiday in case I had more than fifty quid on me and was arrested for smuggeling out currency.......The good old days !

I note that Siddalls, in their news letter, predict a rise above 1.3 and mention that some economists predict 1.5 within 6 months. Mind you they did say it would not go below 1.2..................................JR

PS XE.com showing  1.00 GBP = 1.18314 EUR at the time of writing.

I've been watching BB and I, or rather we that is, have come to a decision that, for better or worse, we're going to transfer a major chunk of our liquid money over immediately and dump it into our recently opened CA Livret A accounts on which they are promising 5% net from Jan 09.

I'm afraid we have a somewhat less optimistic view of what the next couple of years hold for the value of Sterling than darling Darling but only time will tell if we've made the right choice.

We do still have the comfort blanket of my UK salary to fall back on if it goes the wrong way, does that make it a hedge fund I wonder [blink]

Wish us luck [:)]
