TV licence

Hi there!  can anyone teall me if you have to pay the TV licence bit of the taxe d'habitation bill if you have a TV in your property but you only use it to view DVDs, ie we do not watch TV?

Yes, you do have to pay.

It's the owning, not the using or not using, which makes you liable.

Scrap the TV, use a computer with a DVD drive. You don't need a licence for a computer.....yet

You might find people who would disagree with that statement if the computer is used to display DVDs. 

Don't forget that in France it is not a 'Television Licence' as such, but a Redevance Audiovisuelle, and is payable by the occupier of a residence with a television receiver or a comparable device.

Cannot see how anyone could classify a DVD player as a televison receiver. It's no closer to a TV than and old fashioned record player is to a radio.

That's exactly the point, but a DVD player is undeniably an audiovisual device though.

If the DVD player has a tuner and a screen it counts, but a PC with TV card doesn't (yet!)

I think that a monitor doesn't have a(n inbuilt) TV receiver.

if you do not have a tv arial or satellitte dish on your house then they cannot check that you are recieving a signal so get yourself a portable satellite dish then you can pack it away under the bed when the tv detector van comes round

It is the fact that you are playing it through a TV. A TV has a receiver capable of receiving broadcasts and that is what you pay for and it doesn't matter if you use it or not. It also appears that the French have you by the shorts with the coverage of the DVD player!!

if you have a dvd player on your laptop then your not using a tv so you do not need a licence and if you got broadband you can watch tv for free
