Recommended Posts

We have an elderly rather ill cat; needs vet attention asap.

Please - does anyone know the opening hours of the vet on the Market

Square in Eymet (our nearest vet) - essential our cat is seen tomorrow

(Monday) - would be so very grateful for anyone's help in this - thank

you.

Have you tried phoning?  Our vet has someone on call 24 hours a

day - if yours doesn't I'm sure their recorded message will give you

another number to ring.  Our dog was injured at a dog training

session on a Sunday and within 30 mins was having stitches put in - and

we live 12k from the vet.  Good luck.

No direct help I'm afraid, except to endorse the previous post. One of our cats was poorly yesteray evening and we rang at 22.30, spoke to the vet at his practice (he was the local one 'on call'), drove the 15kms and had the little chap treated within the hour. A jab, a bucketload of pills and plenty of reassurance, all for 79 euros at that time of the weekend! Would never have got that in the Thames Valley.

Best of luck 2moro.

Thank you both for your kind and helpful comments...very much appreciated.

After reading your posts, I took a deep breath, stopped panicking, and followed your common-sense advice !!!

I phoned the vets and amazingly was able to speak to her personally. We

took cat to vets this morning....he has been diagnosed with kidney

failure; he had an ecg (?) - little machine with 4 leads that were

attached him to give read-out on heart-rate and blood pressure. Never,

ever seen this in vets in UK - or been present at such a test so that

was a first !!! He has also had some blood taken for blood tests, plus

an injection to help him recover his appetite.

Poor thing had a bit of a tumble 10 days ago and aggravated his

arthritic rear legs and began limping.. He then stopped eating, we took

him to vets (different one to this morning) who gave him painkillers

and thoroughly 'manipulated' his rear legs just to check that he hadn't

done anything serious to his joints. Cat started to eat a bit on

Tuesday and Wednesday, then stopped completely on Thursday, didn't

drink much and just sat around looking very sorry for himself. By

Sunday evening we were really, really worried and of course I'd got

myself into a bit of a 'state' - and suddenly wanted quick answers and

reassurances...!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've now been given pills, vitamins, medicine and special diet tins of

cat food for him. But I'm still worried - he is not yet showing any

signs of wanting to eat even though the vet said she expected that he

would want something to eat this afternoon.  So we're all still

very, very concerned about him....nothing worse than owners worried

about their pet is there...!!!!!!!!!

I really do thank both of you for your interest and advice and concern - it is really so much appreciated - thank you again.

Do let us know how the 'old chap' makes out. It happens to us all when we get a bit elderly. Doubt that I'll get as good treatment / tlc when I get a bit, or rather more, infirm.

Ours has made a full recovery by the way - been sleeping blissfully in the Southern sun this p.m.  It's a cat's life!

Chessie, I know what you must be going through, I went through a couple of scares recently with my pets. At least it sounds as if you have found a very good vet and you are doing everything possible for him.  Please let us know how he gets on.

Hello Sueandpete

So grateful for your advice and support - sadly we had to face the inevitable decision.

Have posted on Pets Forum - 'Putting pet cat to final sleep' - if you

have pets please read this - I think pet owners should be aware of the

differences between French and UK vet/surgical practice and procedures.

Personal notes for -

Ian

WJT

Sarah - The Lime Tree

I don't know how this system works so that I could thank you personally for your help and advice and concerns....

Unfortunately we had to make the horrible inevitable decision.

But I have been so upset and concerned over what happened in his final

few minutes that I have put a separate post on the Pets Forum under

'Putting pet cat to final sleep' -

If you have pets then please read it - I think pet owners should be

aware that there appear to be significant differences between French

and UK vet procedures - and I would like others to avoid the heartache

that we now have to live with......

Thank you all for your good wishes - I think pet owners are the nicest people in the world...!!!

Chessie (still in tears)

I read your other post with great sadness - yes we have 2 dogs and I

can imagine how you must be feeling.  Thanks for letting us know

so that we can be aware what might happen.  I agree with Lori's

comments - your pet is no longer suffering and you did the best that

you could.

Yes, it is very, very sad, but please don't let this give a bad impression of French vets in general.  I don't know what happened here, but it is not normal.

Perhaps anyone who has to go through this should really make sure with their vet what they want beforehand, a full anaesthetic prior to the "putting to sleep".

Not the happiest outcome, but from the initial sounds of it, sadly inevitable. You did the right thing.

Best therapy - find another (or 2!) young cat(s) to cheer you up. You undoubtedly will.

Chessie,

Hope you are feeling a little better, now.   I have been thinking about you all week. Can I also "second" Ians suggestion.  You sound like the sort of folks who would give some poor cat(s) a wonderful loving home.

Ali.
