Forgive me for being ignorant, but we have to return to Bristol in mid May and are flying out from Toulouse on the Tuesday and returning two days later on the Thursday.  What are the practicalities of this, having not done this before, e.g.can I pay by card on exit, is it necessary to park in the long stay area etc.

Proper airport. Park in whichever carpark you wish. The further away from the terminal the cheaper. There is a shuttle bus to deliver you to the terminal and return you. Take a ticket on entry and pay with (certainly French probably other as well) card on exit.

Ceejay, you've got a choice of car parks, dependng on your budget - here are the current charges for the different car parks along with airport maps showing where the different car parks are situated in relation to the terminal building:

Whichever car park you choose, the system should be the same:  you collect your ticket on entry to the car park, stick it in your wallet and, when you return, pay by cash or card (diff machines to accept each) at the 'pay station island' half-way between the main entrance and car park 0.

You'll find more information, including stuff about the shuttle bus to the outlying car parks, here.

Bonne chance!
