Vast forest fire from Le perthus to Figueras

Recommended Posts

There have already been 3 deaths in a huge fire extending from the French side of the border down almost to Figueras

The pall of smoke can be seen from Narbonne!

This is very serious. I know that the worst is in Catalunya, but these towns are places visited daily by many French people living in this region. Two couples who are friends of mine just got back before the fire started, and I know many others who will just pop over the border for an evening out, so it feels 'local'

La Jonquera and le Perthus are our 'duty-free' towns, in so far as that counts for anything these days

Now in the English press:

Anyone who has driven that coast road )much improved in the last few years) will understand why the family panicked and with a strong wind fanning the flames across the road (left to right in the picture) felt they needed to get to the water

I live on the coast between Argelès and Collioure and this morning there are still teams of three or four Canadairs coming over the Albères (foothills of the Pyrenees) every few minutes, and filling with water and circling back towards Le Perthus and Jonquera (Spain), so clearly there is still a lot of damping down to be done.
