Living in Bordeaux

Recommended Posts

Hi, we are two people and one springer spaniel moving to France, to take up a job offer in Pessac on the outskirts of Bordeaux. Ideally, we are looking for a 2 bedroom house/appartement with a garden, and in Bordeaux. We have seen lots of the town on the outskirts and think they are just a bit too rural and isolated for us. Can you help with these two questions - 1/ Are we likely to find the property that we want in Bordeaux; 2/ how long is the tram journey from Bordeaux to Pessac? Thanks for any and all help.

Depends what your budget is. Centre Bordeaux can be almost at London prices. Are you renting or buying ?

Tram under 35 minutes - irrespective of traffic as trams control Bordeaux's traffic lights

Line B - Rats seem to have lost ability to post web adresses. Search Google.Fr tram bordeaux

The Bordeaux British Community is a very active society that you wish to join.

Good luck in your more.  Bordeaux is a lovely city.  The trams have made a huge difference and make transport so easy.

Thanks for the tram link too Anton - for other readers, it only works without the WWWs, so: http://tram.bordeaux.free.fr/

€ 900 a month sounds great to me. Google.fr and Location Bordeaux. looks like no problem

Once played netball for Smith and Nephew in Lincons in Fields Central London. Ladies league = OK if we lost but I was up for gender realignment if we won.

The only other condition was that I wore blue knickers and the cross over skirt

900€ a month could be a bit limite, limite for a two bedroom house/flat with a garden near the centre of Bordeaux in my opinion.  My daughter pays 450€ for her studio flat in a complex of about 100 apartments Merignac - admittedly there is a shared pool and an exercise room (sort of, the equipment hasn't worked for six months) and a security guard but that doesn't seem to have added much to the rent as 400-450 € seemed to be the going rate for about 22 sq metres in reasonable condition.

Another thing - rules about how much rent you can pay are very strict here so do bear that in mind.  You can't pay a rent that exceeds more than 1/3 of your income after deductions, the insurance won't have it, I know someone who had his application to rent an appartment costing 2500€ a month turned down because his monthly income made him 43 € a month short of the requirement.  He offered to pay a yeear's shortfall in advance but that wasn't allowed.

Thanks guys. We are hoping to live 'inside the boulevards', where the city is a bit livelier. I have been through Talence and Begles, Pessac and Merignac and the centres seem a bit small and quiet. The company I work for has links with an organisation called CILG who help you relocate, so I'm hoping they'll come up with some ideas!
