I'd deffo feel more insulted to be called a "lady".

In the circles in which I moved, "lady" was applied to people in menial jobs such as a "lady cleaner":  it was a way of somehow elevating someone's status but of course it only sounded patronising.

If "woman doctor", "woman engineer", "woman academic" is perfectly good, I'd feel mad as hell to be referred to as a "lady".

I suppose it's all down to the circles in which one moves.

When phoning for an appointment with a GP, if I felt it was necessary, I would prefer to have a consultation with a 'lady' doctor rather than a 'woman' doctor.

As a not terrible politically correct male whom tends to think of most women as ladies, I would never ever think of  prefixing a docter, engineer or academic with the name of their sex
I don't get the nationalist thing anyway, the and have got devoloution and their own assemblies so what business do they have in Westminster and the English parliament ?

Am I being thick or controversial, I don't know.

No Ernie you're not!

Lots of us object to the waste of our tax here - apart from the illogicality of it  all.

Best news I've heard this side of the Millenium [:D][:D][:D]

I truly look forward to history recording him as the worst PM in living memory, if not of all time.
There is no question of who was the 'worst PM in living memory, if not of all time.', and the present mess the country is in is the her responsibility.
Typical NormanH cynicism !

If only we had a PM with some guts/balls to make the changes we  desparately need.  MT certainly had plenty! And the country was in far better condition then than it is now.

I also agree with Ernie, if Wales and Scotland want to dissolve the union and become separate countries then let them. They already have their own 'assemblies' so they have no need to be in the English parliament. They will then of course have to negotiate their own entry in to Europe (if the wish) and their own trade agreements instead of leaching off the ones England has made. They can have their own currency too if they wish. Basically they should be either 'in' or 'out', its up to them. We should also charge the Scots for rebuilding Hadrian's wall. [;-)]
The country was also fortunate to have lots of North Sea oil then - off the coast of - Scotland. And owned other assets, sold off at knock-down prices.
Actually it no longer does. I can't find and recent figures but the ones for 2007 show that they produce 1.4bn barrels per YEAR and in the same year the UK consumption was 1.7bn barrels per DAY. We also assume that the oil produced there is all used for petrol etc when in fact I believe a lot of it is specialised oil used for other things. North sea oil has seen massive drops in production since 1999 when it peaked at 2.5bn barrels per year. The UK is ranked 14th in league table of oil consumers with only slight changes in consumption until you get to Japan (3rd largest consumer) at 5bn barrels per day, China at 7bn barrels per day and then there is a massive jump to the number one consumer, the US, who use a massive 20bn barrels per day. The last figure shows the need for the US to control as much of the oil reserves as possible and possibly why they were quite happy to invade Iraq but then thats another story.

Nah, nah, it's really like this:

Old Farts or Colonel Blimps with their subservient doormats

NCOs and their dreary, frightful Abigails (as in Abigail's Party)

Other ranks coming from all levels of social strata that you might not readily meet outside of the Armed Forces and their sassy, interesting, companions!

See, Steve, I HAVE met them all.........I promise![:P]

Not forgetting the money that will be saved as the English Government would be forced to stop paying the subsidy it currently provides. I believe it equates to £240.00 from each English taxpayer [8-)]

Regarding independance for Scotland and Wales (not forgetting Northern Ireland), why should they be the only ones to decide?

I think England ought to be given the choice of independance from them, then they can fund their own free prescriptions, nursing homes, university places etc etc

I think SWMBO would object most strongly to being called a subservient doormat.

Having experienced the ''women'' of the Scots Guards ORs on buses in Berlin I would not label them as ''sassy, interesting, companions'', my labelling would be ''edited as not for a family forum''
