Blood Pressure

I was only telling my neighbour the other day about how calm & unstressed I was, now that I'd been living down here for a few years.  Hmmm ...........

OH said to me (over a nice chilled glass or two of rose this evening), let's order the Crimbo cards now & get them sent to (friends) so that they can bring them over next month.  Easy.

Ring the charity telephone number (0845). Recorded message with the usual options. Hit '1' & I get the dreaded "non attribue" message.

Go online: items put in to 'basket'.  Proceed to checkout: "Can only be ordered by UK residents". Aaaaaarrrrgh!!!!

I'm trying to order £20 worth of Christmas cards, I'm not a money-bloody-launderer!!  Have sent a snottogram to that effect, but I'm wasting my time. [:@]

It's enough to drive you to drink.

I send a lot of ecards these days, with 'proper' cards only for relatives and special friends.

However, I did buy a few Christmas cards when I was at the Bodleian Library at Oxford recently, as their 'booky' cards were so lovely. It was very early for me, I must admit.

I also confess to buying 3 presents yesterday in John Lewis; lovely gifts I'd admired recently, and now half price - couldn't resist! The problem now will be remembering where they are when mid-December comes along!

Sorry for mentioning that word again in August, Swissie!

I was there on Thursday - maybe I bumped into her.  Funnily enough I too was looking at their Crimbo cards but as I'm travelling by train I decided against them.  I buy my cards from the Injured Jockeys Fund and the Motorsport Safety Fund.  Neither has any problem sending them to France.

E- cards?  Horrid things.  How do you hang them up on the wall for goodness's sake?[8-)]

Well, I got an email reply today. To be fair, it provided a number to ring in order to  ............. place an order. Sadly, the number was unobtainable.[:'(]

Yeh, yeh, talking about Crimbo cards in mid - August is sad and no we don't want to send e-cards. Re the timing, it's a case of practicality - friends coming over etc.

I just really get the hump with firms who don't think their websites through.  Bad commercial sense.

I'm lucky, as an atheist/agnostic (never can remember which) married to a yid we never have to worry about the lunatic world of christmas, over commercialised carp about an event that probably never happened and certainly did not coincide with the Winter Solstice anyway.

But Hanukah and Diwali ? That's another story.

Thing is the older I get the more I find words that make my blood boil...words like crimbo-leccy-this arvo-pete tong-pants-peanut smuggling-give me a bell-L8r-M8-thnx-B4-awesome-full on-minging.

That is apart from the strange way of talking by some tv presenters.

It's no wonder I have high blood pressure. I do my best to eat a healthy balanced diet in order to keep my system working at its peak (ahem) but it feels like there is a conspiracy by the rest of the world to force me into endless ranting and it's not good for me.

Now see what you have done gardian [:)]

PS

If I have missed some blood boiling words please feel free to list them as, after my rant, I feel a sort of Sunday morning mellowing coming over me.
In Leicester we had fabulous Diwali festivals - what are the dates for this year?
Its not dates its a date, I thought you would have known that!

Diwali is on the 5th November 2010, its not very hard to find out just try typing in to Google "diwali festival 2010" or perhaps your being cantankerous or can't be bothered. [:D]

In which case why not just shut down the Forum - most things can be Googled after all. Somebody mentions Diwali - it brings back happy memories of great times had with my students - and I wonder- when is it this year? How that makes me cantankerous, I just do not know! Thanks for the info - we won't be there, sadly. I did notice the smilie...

I wonder how long it takes to shed the past??[:)]

My thoughts recently are for all our great Muslim friends- with Ramadan being earlier and earlier, and with this heat, the days must seems so long and almost unbearable. Salam alekum.

Because the forum is for English speaking people who either live in France, have a holiday home there (not Switzerland, theres a specific forum for them http://www.englishforum.ch/ - I expect your a member anyway) or have a love of France.

Don't worry, Swiss because "The past is a foreign country:  they do things differently there"!

Weedon, do you mind either writing in English or in French as I do not understand your post and I am likely to raise my blood pressure trying?

What a very nice man! I checked the forum rules- there is something about all sorts of things this above Post seems to breach - but no, can't find the above criteria in the rules.

I am British and Swiss, part French and Hugenot by descent - lived in the UK for nearly 40 years, still have a home there, my children, grand-children and so many friends - and hey ho, I DO speak English (with a funny accent!) - I have lived and worked in France, spend much time there with French friends and taught French culture and politics in a 6th Form - go to France practically everyday - but yes, I do apologize, my house is 400 metres from the French border. I hate to boast, but I do wonder how many people here speak French as well as I speak English, somehow?

Your reply has nothing to do with my comment - which was that many people do ask questions here on the forum, instead of Googling, for whatever reason, and wherever they live- and that it is definitely one of the very points of taking part in a Forum- and clearly NOT against the rules Q.

Gosh - I think my blood pressure might have risen a bit there.  [:P]

Off to France to listen to a great concert, with our French friends playing guitar, accordeon and keyboard. Just come back from a Fete du Terroir, just round the corner - you've guessed it, in beautiful France, which we love, of course. A bon entendeur... salut.

Looking back I can't see anywhere where I said you have broken any 'rules' (we don't have rules, being grownups, just a code of conduct), I simply mentioned what the forum was for. However, as you have mentioned the 'rules' you might like to check the bit that says, and I quote, from the Forum Code of Conduct.: "Please keep to the topic of the original thread and do not start more than one thread about the same topic in different sections. This will help users to locate the information that they are looking for and will save space on the servers. " and I am not sure how your question fits in with the OP. Still many of the threads go off topic so I guess it's best to let it slip this time. I would suggest that if you want to ask a question you start a thread of your own, it makes it easier for people find the information via the Search facility.

I am very glad to hear you have such an active social life but I am not sure why you have bothered to mention it, it seems a bit strange to do so much in the same way as you mention your friends and family back in Leicester, sort of out of context I guess. I do think you should be a little more careful about mentioning places near to you and where you are going. I don't know if there is a french term for 'Burglar Bill' but with the personal information you have given in some of the forums it wouldn't be very difficult to work out where you live, if you wanted of course, unless you are not worried about security etc. Unfortunately, as some past and present members can testify, people have discovered in the past where individuals live and life became unpleasant for them which is why we discourage posts giving personal information and at times edit them. Personally we have a housekeeper, close neighbours and a couple of dogs plus security gates so its not a problem for us but it might be wise not give out to much information in public forums.

I have been to Leicester many times in the past (not something I would brag about) and also have some friends there, one is currently principle of a well known 6th form college (just think of the current queens name, I believe he knows of you). Both my wife and I have been treated at the BUPA hospital at Oadby as well when we also lived there. Nice place but not my personal cup of tea as they say.

Hope you had a very enjoyable evening.

As to my reply to your comment, well it was a question and I answered it for you but it did seem pointless to mention the subject in a thread about something else

Principal Quillan, your English fails you. Never heard of him or met him so I have no idea how he could have heard of me - I am perfectly aware that anybody who wanted to find out who I am could easily do so - but why they would want to, truly beats me! It would not take a genious at all. Been asking questions then?

All our neighbours are armed police officers and work day and night, thank you. Your post is truly unpleasant and is surely meant to intimidate and as such, again, would not fit in well with the Code of Conduct, sadly.
