At around 10h10 today, I got 3 DIFFERENT messages to tell me that the site was not working and on the 4th try got through and so have posted this quickly before like in previous days, it completely stops working correctly again.

OK, some will no doubt say, well it's free, so why complain....well good point but to some of it is just plain annoying I guess.

But what really makes me wonder, is that it must be apparent that :

1. Servers are totally rubbish at doing the job they are meant to be doing.

2. It isn't perfected in general yet

3. Or of course, they offer bad service and don't give two monkeys about their paying clients

4. You pay for what you get ?

We have some members with our own similar set up and others who are pretty clued up on these matters, what do they think ?

It's faster... tho' I get error messages when trying to access threads. But my major irritation is I cannot post from my (preferred) Mozilla browser - I log in, compose a message, and when I submit the msg I get a session timed out response. If I fire up IE, I can post. I believe from previous threads that plenty of us use Mozilla - is anyone else having similar problems?

Moi !! and yes I am with Mozilla as well. I agree it does have faster spells but too thinly spread about to be much use !

With Mozilla of course, you miss out on a few add on "jobby's" like spellchecker, colouring and emphasising etc which OK, is not the end of the world but why on here and not on many other sites where Mozilla has all the knobs, bells and whizzers (just made that one up !) that I.E enjoys ?

Unfortunately our webservers don't appear to be on our side at the moment.

To resolve some problems with inconsistent content replication between multiple web servers (if anyone's interested, Google "NTFRS"), we're currently in the process of relocating all content from storage locally attached to each web server to a high capacity centralised filer.

While this has solved the file replication issues that have been causing things like disappearing CSS, it's uncovered a new set of performance & configuration issues with the filer. Tuning these for our kind of traffic volume is a bit of a black art, and essentially requires plenty of patience and trial & error. In a nut shell, you make some estimates concerning file server load; configure the web servers & filer appropriately; monitor the situation to see if things get better or worse; adjust the settings appropriately and repeat until everything reaches a suitable level of stability.

In the age old fashion things may get a little worse before they get better, but the situation will be improving over the course of the morning.

Regards

Tim - Thanks for the explanation. I have to say that I had not even noticed. That's because of a line fault that France Telecom is taking ages to sort out, limiting my internet connections to a true speed of 2.4kbps (if I'm lucky) so lucky even to get time out messages. At present I'm taking advantage of a freak good(?) connection of 16.2k to download all my e-mail attachments. Plus the fact that the hosting company I use for my own sites has been messing about and has now managed to remove all of the forum files from its servers. So it all happens at once, doesn't it.

Ab, Subscriptions for Specialist are actually handled by a 3rd party company.

You can contact them via email ([email protected]) or phone 01858 438861. You'll probably need to provide your address or any references received when placing the order.
Unable to use the recent topics section at the top of the page today, just get </script>void
I get this too from work (XP, IE6) but fine from home with Firefox.

Shows errors on page. One possibility is the anti-virus server that scans web pages could be removing some javascript?

We've seen some problems with the Norton Internet Security / Anti Virus, and some recent versions of Mcafee Anti Virus products that try to filter javascript from pages. In some cases these products don't distinguish between potentially "bad" code, and that which is required to run a website.

As this is something on the end user's machines all I can suggest is that you try disabling any client side blocking products (Mcafee/Norton etc.) and see if it helps. If you're unsure how to do this, please consult the product's help facility as the instructions needed will differ between products.
