Department Stores

May seem like a silly question, but does France have department stores like Debenhams, House of Fraser, M&S, BHS.  In all my travels around the Country I don't ever recall seeing this type of store, though that might be because we tend to avoid large city centres.  It's only relevant to us now as we are about to move there in May.

Must depend where you live. There are none in our whole department. You have to buy everything at the supermarket, but particular things are only stocked at certain times of year. So if you want bed linen when it's not bed linen promo week, you are in trouble (OK, there will be a tiny selection somewhere, but pas grand chose). There are a few very expensive little boutiques as well, but a gaping chasm in the middle of the market (outside the really big towns anyway). A shopper's paradise it ain't, but at least there's no temptation to spend money ...

Forget it !

Best to order through the net in the UK & get the stuff delivered to friends who are coming out. Whatever, you'll spend days and lots of kms trying to find what you want - but that's what being down here is all about, isn't it? But don't hold your breath expecting a result on every trip.

Yes every town has a department store where you can get everything that you can get in M&S and House Of Fraser, its called the town centre, and you may get wet walking from section to section!!  In the big cities as others have posted,  there are UK style Departmental stores, but like House of Frazer many trnd to be small franchises in the same building. .
And if you get really desperate,a day trip to Jersey for the delights of M&S/Voisons /De Gruchy etc. + some fry up brekkies. At the moment about 30e day return from St.Malo.
Not really an option if you live in the Lot is it?  The last time I looked it was about 700km's and 8 hours drive from the Lot to St Malo,  so not reallly handy for a day trip for a fry up and shopping at M&S. is it?[:D].  You could fly to the UK for a day at M&S in Chelmsford quicker[:)]
