The Elections

I'm a bit disappointed that this has not been posted to after this Sunday especially by those of us living here so I will kick it off again.

My local village swung to the left again which is no surprise but the surprise, if you could call it that was by how much, just over 50%, way down on the municipal elections. Sarkozy's lot came in second with FN coming a good last. My local town, whose name I use on the forum, went for Sarkozy's lot with the socialists coming second and FN getting less than 10%. I see Mme. Le Pen was in a high state of excitement, in one TV interview I thought she was having an orgasm, saying how well her party had done in getting so many votes. Just like Ukip in the UK there are no prizes for coming second (or, in the FN's case third). I wonder who the next president will be, might be worth having a tenner on Sarkozy. Unfortunately the odds are not very good to make money on Sarkozy, between 13/8 and 2/1.

I wonder if those who are more 'politically aware' in France than I have any thoughts on the compulsory running of male and female couples as I believe this is the first time they have tried this? Has it made a difference to how people vote for example? Should they do this for the presidential elections for the president and vice president?

I noticed this compulsory running of M/F couples for each group too - no idea how it has affected voting though. I do know that France was one of the last in the old "Europe" to give women the vote. I'll have to ask my neighbour.

The Gers has remained socialist, though I think one canton swung to the right. It has always had a communist tradition, which suits us [I]

When we arrived here in 2002 one of the first political comments we heard was from a worker in M. Bricolage, who said "what kind of country is this, when we have to choose a president from a criminal or a n-azi?"
