More strikes and a warning

Recommended Posts

It seems that the nutters at the commie CGT and Sud are determined to bring France to her knees over

the Loi Travail which is designed to create a more flexible labour market.

Besides strikes on the railways, they have called for strikes in transport generally. Where this concerns the average Joe and Josette at least potentially is that they plan to blocade oil terminals and storage facilities, which could lead to a shortage of fuel. I say 'could' because the level of support for the strikes is not yet known.

In addition, ports and airports are to be the targets with lorries blocading the former.

So, guys, keep those tanks full and maybe stock the freezer a tiny bit, just in case.

Is it true that the French are pushing to get striking included as an Olympic sport?

Currently listening to some radio broadcasts from Easter 1984 and in the news - French air traffic controllers on strike!

As long as they aren't planning to block the autoroute into Spain tomorrow afternoon it ain't gpoing to effect me.

I think Girona airport should be OK?? [blink]

I was hell in the Cit´, Carcassonne the other day!! The chateau was shut due to la greve [:-))] I thought that the world was about to fall off its axis[:'(]

Not long after we moved over they was an absolute horror of a strike in Paris. All of the opera singers walked out because their retirement age was being raised from 50 to 60 odd! I'm not too sure how we survived that one [8-)]

Just to warn anyone travelling to Ouistreham for the ferry that the southern side of the Caen ring road is blocked (the bit past Mondeville shopping centre and the autoroute to Paris). The northern side with the turning to Cherbourg is OK at the moment.

We crossed to France on Friday evening and knowing about the oil refinery blockades went straight to Cité Europe to fill up, as we were heading down to the south. The queues were enormous, had a long wait. No rationing.

Driving down to the south we've seen a few petrol stations off the motorway that were closed with 'no fuel' signs, but most looked fine. Motorway petrol stations had few customers so presumably most people had managed to get cheaper petrol for their journeys elsewhere.
A friend in the Vendee tells me that drivers were yesterday limited to 20 euros-worth of diesel per vehicle.

Most of the garages around us in southern 56 are now totally empty.

When I went to our local very small town this am it was not busy like it usually is - very few weekend visitors as no-one wants to waste their precious remaining drops of fuel.

The problem now is that the lorry drivers who are concerned by a loss of overtime have been orered to blockade the fuel depots and refineries.

Last time this happened the supermarkets were trucking the stuff in from Belgium. Dunno if they can do that again.

I use my bike for most journeys at this time of year, as a consequence a fill up lasts me a couple of months, I have 3/4 of a tank so would not dream of topping it up.

A journey into town and back is as quick or often quicker by bike but I would not use the car now even if I wanted/needed to because the whole town is gridlocked with queuing cars, these queues start from the 3 filling stations, it would seem that everyone from the town and all the surrounding communes is panic buying.

I have only seen one other person cycling or walking.

My pal filled up at 6am this morning, he had to wait half an hour in the queue, the pumps were padlocked by 8am.

Oh well, we planned to delay our next visit to the house until the end of June because of building work we're having in the UK. Given what seems to be the state of play in France at the moment I can see us delaying further or perhaps not bothering at all.

The Ardeche seems relatively sane compared with some of the above posts. Yes there are queues at some filling stations - Auchan was just tailed back onto the exit of the roundabout - probably a total of 20 - 25 vehicles for 8 pumps - so even that is not record breaking. The only "rationing" was the usual card transaction limit of 120€, which is several times what I could fill up with. Should now do me for at least 4 weeks.
In Albi this morning the fuel stations were queued out for a few hundred meters down the roads. I dont know if they are rationing or not, I never stopped.
Oh - we're driving to Albi this weekend for an Athletics competition. Maybe things will be a bit better by then. If not it will be 56mph on the peage there and back as I think we would make it.

No problems at all in Tarbes this afternoon.

BBC News report:

However, some 1,600 of France's 12,000 petrol stations had either run dry or were running short of supplies by late Monday morning.

and:

However, the transport minister said it was wrong to talk of petrol shortages.

Obviously, the transport minister has a secret supply.

Leclerc in St Gaudens closed and queues at Casino and the other non supermarket stations.

There's a photo doing the rounds on social media of a Leclerc in Brittany who were refusing access to fuel to people unless they'd spent €60 in the supermarket first, been to the acceuil and got a token allowing them to buy it!

Apparently the outcry was such that they eventually took the signs down and abandoned the policy.

I am truly wondering how we will catch our ferry this week. Car says it will do 500miles on current tank, nearly 1000 kms to the coast from here. Not the first time for us, just did not want it again and not now!

Filled up Saturday and no queues.... boy were there today!
