France better than UK, says Spectator

Recommended Posts

Not sure I do.

It is written by anther Brit t##t that lives in rural SW France who thinks SW France is France. If he had lived in a number of locations then maybe he would have a better understanding of France.

So another ponpous Brit being a ponpous Brit writing an article about a country he knows nothing about.

I did enjoy reading it though.

And I could not read it, because it asked that I subscribe.

However, IF it is by someone living in SW France, then I may read it by curiosity, but that Year in Provence put me off reading anything by brits living in France....... codswollop usually covers it and is the polite expression I believe.

Remember I no longer live in France and it keeps asking me to subscribe, even tried private browsing which sometimes works.

I was out on traffic free roads en campagne NE England a few days ago and very nice it is........... but not where most people have to work.

Idun

I am back in the UK and can read the article OK. Try clicking the little cross (x) in the top right hand corner of the subscribe request window and it disappears.

ALBF - your arguments about "real" France are getting rather boring. It is quite plane to anyone of some intelligence that there are variations between rural/urban/city and other types of areas within any particular country. Also different lifestyles. In that case, when a comparison is made between countries anyone should be able to compare "like with like".

All these different types of area/lifestyles are "real". You aren't the only "real" person in France.

Now Richard

Chancer is allowed to slag off his community left right and centre without being taken to task . Idun is very up front about their feelings towards France and they are not very positive to be fair. Dave openly admits he hates his French neighbours and his community.

Me, I love living in France but I get it in the neck by forum members.

Why is that then ?

If only I could click on a link to at least try, with most postings I have to copy and paste and recently something has happened to this forum that wont allow me to block text to copy from a posting unless I go into an edit screen, its like a mouse problem but only with this forum, you might get the cursor where you want it but only be able to block one word or the whole paragraph or page, not the link you want, then the cursor wont appear, cany block text with the keyboard as you normally can.

And when I finally managed to copy the link (from the edit posting page) and opened it, shut down the subscribe rubbish it went to another article altogether.

I think most people have given up on this crock of s**te of a forum by now.

No cross on the corner of the subscription page on my pc, I did look for it, but in the grand scheme of things, doubt that not seeing this page will change my life much!!! But thanks for the help!!!

Average of 3 a day, they soon mount up you will see.

Come to think of it it does depend on not being banned so maybe you wont [:D]

Your average is not much less, if there were more people here likely to take your bait then your average would beat mine by a country mile like it did on the other place even with your postings divided amongst your multiple identities, still I have said it may times, you have breathed new life into this forum and managed to ignite indignation from some who would otherwise be comatose [+o(][B]

What did they talk about? Not sure if it was this one but one of the first postings I ever read was someone asking for help/advice about whatever it was and saying "unfortunately we appear to have bought a property in a non English speaking village" [:-))][:-))]   a classic like Birdfoodmiles.

Real France, how could I define that.

For me it is the way the majority of french working people who don't live and work en plein campagne live. From those with commutes, to those that live in cities and towns.

Simplistic description, and why not.

I have seen enough french city dwellers be very sniffy about country folk and country living.

Real France?

What sort of warped construct is that?

I don't think there is a real France, any more than there is a real United (that's a joke) Kingdom.

People from Marseille behave differently from those in Strasbourg. My limited experience of Paris suggest yet a third behaviour and certainly those living in (this part of) the country have yet another perspective and behaviour.

To try and suggest that there is an homogeneous "France" or even an homogeneous "urban France" is IMHO as senseless as suggesting that Geordies are like Suverners, that the Welsh are like the Scots, or Cornishmen are like Essex man .

'Real France' is in what day to day life is in France. Go to to school, go to Lycee or university, get a job, play loto, get married, play loto, have kids, play loto, pay for kids schooling, pay for kids university, retire, play loto then die.

Expats moving to France by pass the whole French living bit and live in a bubble and think they live in France.

French France and expat France are two very different things..

Big difference.

ALBF and Idun - I think what you describe as "real" France is only what you perceive which is a valid opinion.

However the people living in our hamlet and further afield are also "real people" as are lots of expats at the various stages of the lifecycle which you describe.

Really your description of the real France lifestyle can be applied to people living in most countries, perhaps substitute football for loto in the UK though.

Our life when we first moved here - wife takes the kids to school, I go to work, wife collects kids from school then straight to swimming training, once everyone's back we sit down to eat together, next day repeat etc, Saturday boys play football, Sunday badminton or swimming competition, next week repeat. Guess what, this was our life in the UK so all we did was just change the location, by your definition we've experienced the 'real France' but to us it's just life. The same goes for retirees, if you were retired in the UK and then came here what would/should you do differently - substitute lawn bowls for boules, eat at 12 instead of when you're hungry etc?

'Think they live in France'. Well, obviously British people who've moved here do live in France! Their lives might be different from yours, but it's still lived in France. And your description would not apply to all French people either.

I agree a few Brits do seem to mainly socialise with other Brits, often because they can't speak much French. However, many of us do speak to our French neighbours, register to vote, volunteer locally, turn up at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday and many are working here too.
