Notre Dame burning

Recommended Posts
a huge gasp went up from the crowd as the Spire fell
The gasp from the crowd was peculiarly terrible.

First St Sulpice, then St Denis, and now Notre Dame.  What a coincidence.  (And how strangely monocultural.)

And last month ten churches attacked in one week.

But at least our president is taking firm and decisive action  -  he has announced that he is cancelling a speech.

It would seem over the past few years, once repairs start, that in old buildings, or even The Cutty Sark, we end up with a fire.

Coincidence?????

I have no religion, but I do appreciate great architecture, and I was so sad to see this tonight, for it was indeed one of the world's great wonders.[:(]

I am dumbfounded and very sad.  I love old churches and this one was dear to my heart. When I first visited as a teenager, it was the oldest and biggest and most beautiful building that I had ever seen.  It probably will now always remain that for me.

I am NOT into religion in any way, BUT surely any Catholic with a faith must see the fire as a divine expression of serious disapproval by their deity of the behaviour of the Church in relation to the behaviour of a significant number of priests and the hiererchy?

Well, no, if God exists, s/he would not be a vengeful, terrifying being forever putting the ..er..fear of god into all and sundry.  God should be gentle, compassionate, understanding, friendly and above all have a great sense of humour[:)]

Tandis que des enfants s'amusent au parterre ;

Well, Betty, I laughed because you laughed but, even so, I do believe God gets a lot of very bad press....

As for re-building Notre Dame, I don't think there is any point to rebuilding it as it was.  It's good if the towers can be saved but the new-build would be better as a modern building (and yes modern buildings can be beautiful), maybe modular, with hi tech materials that are safe , warm, functional, etc.

Could be an exciting project if they don't insist on re-creating a replica.  It could never "feel" the same anyway.
