woolybanana
Serious fire at Notre Dame Catherdal, flames high above the roof. It looks very bad.
woolybanana
Spire burning like a torch, most of roof alight.
suein56
Spire tragically now gone .. it is dispiriting to watch on the news. Apparently a huge gasp went up from the crowd as the Spire fell .. the spire and the whole is/was such an integral part of the fabric of Paris. Tancrède
a huge gasp went up from the crowd as the Spire fell
The gasp from the crowd was peculiarly terrible.First St Sulpice, then St Denis, and now Notre Dame. What a coincidence. (And how strangely monocultural.)And last month ten churches attacked in one week. But at least our president is taking firm and decisive action - he has announced that he is cancelling a speech. woolybanana
What else could he do? There will be investigations and it will be rebuilt. But it is a tragedy all the same.
idun
It would seem over the past few years, once repairs start, that in old buildings, or even The Cutty Sark, we end up with a fire.Coincidence?????I have no religion, but I do appreciate great architecture, and I was so sad to see this tonight, for it was indeed one of the world's great wonders.[:(]
Loiseau
Yes, I thought of Cutty Sark too, Idun. Such a tragedy for France.
mint
I am dumbfounded and very sad. I love old churches and this one was dear to my heart. When I first visited as a teenager, it was the oldest and biggest and most beautiful building that I had ever seen. It probably will now always remain that for me. woolybanana
I am NOT into religion in any way, BUT surely any Catholic with a faith must see the fire as a divine expression of serious disapproval by their deity of the behaviour of the Church in relation to the behaviour of a significant number of priests and the hiererchy? mint
Well, no, if God exists, s/he would not be a vengeful, terrifying being forever putting the ..er..fear of god into all and sundry. God should be gentle, compassionate, understanding, friendly and above all have a great sense of humour[:)]
woolybanana
Is a Welsh God so benevolent? If so, He is the only one!
Théière
Well Idun, it's no coincidence that builders are careless slobs and get the contract to rebuild whatever they burn down. Cutty Sark and Hampton court were high powered halogen lamp fires I believe.
NormanH
Well, Betty, I laughed because you laughed but, even so, I do believe God gets a lot of very bad press....As for re-building Notre Dame, I don't think there is any point to rebuilding it as it was. It's good if the towers can be saved but the new-build would be better as a modern building (and yes modern buildings can be beautiful), maybe modular, with hi tech materials that are safe , warm, functional, etc.Could be an exciting project if they don't insist on re-creating a replica. It could never "feel" the same anyway.
