LD Lines Good Deal

I've been well taken by LD Lines since they suddenly appeared. They even offered free crossings as a promotion!

Lets hope they find a way to compete on the Western Channel and give our friends in BF a hard time [;-)] the prices on the Plymouth Roscoff route are still making my eyes water.

The problem with LD is that as their boat has so few cabins, they can squeeze in a deckful of cars at little or no cost and offer what are truely bargain fares for those who are prepared to rough it. But they are not, and cannot ,offer a comparable level of service with their existing equipment.

Unfortunately equiping themselves with a craft really suited to the Western Channel would mean significant increases in the fares.

Good point, there is no doubt that the BF ships are pretty comfortable but for many people that's not really the point. All I want is to get to France quickly and cheaply.

If you are unfortunate enough to live in the West Country and want to get to Brittany you need to either drive the biggest part of an extra 700 miles or bear the cost of no competition.

However LD Lines are well connected and might be prepared to make the investment after this initial dipping of their toes .....?

The problem is basically that to get a new ship built would take at least 2-3 years (which is why Brittany Ferries is using the Pont l'Abbe while Bretagne 2 and the freight-carrying sister ship are being built), and, believe it or not, there are no suitable passenger/freight vessels available for charter. Norman Spirit, ex-Aquitaine, was the only available ship last year and that is not really suited to the route. All the available ships are either freight-only, built for day crossings, or just too old to comply with the British and French requirements for passenger-carrying ships. LD Lines' CEO, Pierre Gehanne, is on record as saying that if a suitable second ship was available they would go after it.
