Caterpillars

Recommended Posts

I have enough trouble remembering the names of some of the butterflies we get here without becoming a caterpillar expert too. So when I found a big, pretty caterpillar on my fennel herb plants, I found this website which I think is rather good:

http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/

Not all caterpillars have photos which is unfortunate but there is a good search function whereby the more information you put in about the caterpillar, including the plant it's on, the better the resulting list of possible identities.

I now know I've got eight Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars munching their way up my fennel plants. [:D]
Often on carrots as well, they don't do any harm!!
They can have entire crops of carrots as far as I'm concerned if it increases the likelihood of Swallowtails in the garden. [:D]

I did have a lot of little, greenish, arching caterpillars scoffing birch leaves... but local blue  t i t s  got those before I could identify them.
