baby hedgehogs

for about two weeks now we have had a hedgehog comming onto the patio and feeding on the sunflower seeds that fall from the bird feeders, but she has been arriving at about 7.30 pm in full sunshine. last night as i was feeding the baby chicks in the shed i saw her in the leaf mould compost heap suckling two babies both are the size of large hamsters and have thier spines as we are well into september can they survive hibernationclive

It's only September Clive and although I haven't got a clue as to where you are they should be fine, plenty of time in most of France before any serious cold weather. Hedgehogs rarely hibernate for any length of time and will wake up in winter on and of whenever the weather is relatively mild.

If you get English telly - Friday nights on BBC is Autumn Watch.  Each week they cover a different topic and last week was hibernation. 

Check out their website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/autumnwatch/  Unfortunately as we are in France we can't take part in any of their surveys as it's UK only, but the same principles apply to the wildlife we have in common.
