Jonzjob
I wonder if anyone can identify this fruit? It was a large, wide rather than tall tree, growing in the gaurigue amongst the vine fields not far from home. The leaves don't look like fruit tree jobbies. The fruit tastes slightly sweet but slightly dry too. Although that was only tasted from a tiny part[:-))] Still very hard and not ripe yet.The ruler is a proper one, in inches[:D]
Russethouse
Could they be medlars ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crataegus_azarolus (there are other varieties)
Gardengirl
I thought quince at first, but they're not - leaves are wrong too. I thought medlars had ends like pomegranates.
Russethouse
There are several different varieties....I can't think of anything else, like GG I first thought of quince

Gardengirl
Sorbus - well done! My collection of books on trees, plants etc is in UK - and I do miss it at times! But not enough room here for them. Pity Kindle can't do lovely colour pictures!
Pierre ZFP
Edit: Books can still beat the net! Maybe one day we'll be able to search using images.
Certainly can! There's a brilliant App for Android phones that will scan an image (or picture) using the inbuilt camera then search for a matching image. How cool is that? Also, scan a bar-code and it will tell you all the product details and the prices/stockist of that product in the local area. Loiseau
Great to have an ID! [:D]I saw that tree in a garden last week and have been speculating ever since as to what it could have been. (I had ruled out quince and medlar, as I have both in my garden and they are very different.)Angela

Identified it through a Spanish forum, and went there a couple of years ago to take some new pics. It is now a well known site, with large car park and visitor centre etc.Near Pancorbo, País Vasco, on the north side of N1 just north of the town.It was erected by "The Western Ranges Asssociation" in the USA, in thanks to the N Spanish shepherds who worked in the USA.
richard51
I think that the Algerians were not too happy with the french at the time. Was it a quick escape. Why were you there in the first place? Making a quick buck?
