NormanH
Has just died.Although normally I prefer classical music I had an enormous admiration for his work.Despite the clichés calling him the French Sinatra I considered his work far superior both because he was also a singer/songwriter and also because he dared to sing uncomfortable songs of a sort that would have been unthinkable at the period for American crooners.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/01/obituaries/charles-aznavour-dead.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba3Pk36ie0YA selection from the archiveshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY5HYyHMTDQAnd extraordinarily his last TV interview at 94 as recent as Fridayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIFzWXsdfuM
Gardengirl
One of the greats for me, Norman, definitely more talented than Sinatra. I heard his last interview, what a marvellous way to leave this earth at such a grand age.
Gardian
Agreed.A good singer / composer / performer.
Loiseau
+1 to that, Gardian. He always looked 94, though, even on the sleeves of the 45rpm records that my French boyfriend gave me in 1961.
Judith
Indeed, sad that another of our icons is gone, but sadly even "immortels" are not immortal. One of the better more modern French singers.
ericd
What I liked about his songs is that they were written for a purpose.
nomoss
What was that song, I believe sung by him in the early 60's, that kept repeating a line which ended with something sounding like ...................... pota-a-a-a-h je?

nomoss
A bit like it, but I remember the drawn-out a-a-a-a was preceded by a rapid string of words I could never decipher.Maybe not him at all.

YCCMB
Try listening to it on YouTube. It certainly fits your description as he sings "et pourtant je...blah bla." And the pourtant je sounds a bit soupy to me.IT can't be the Soup Soup song. That was Cher.
