Label Rouge

Do you buy Label Rouge?

A French neighbour recently poured scorn on the whole system, and said that the whole thing is just a rip-off.

I've been buying poulet fermier/Label Rouge, then the other day I bought a roast chicken that wasn't either of these, it was half the price and it tasted just as good.

Have I missed something?  Is LR just a big scam?

I usually buy these chooks, thinking that they will taste much better than their poor economy cousins. But I have to say that I found that a good free range / organic chicken in the UK much better. Its not in the cooking because I roast them in exactly the same way but I find french birds not as tasty and a little tough.

Exactly.  With all that freedom, I find their legs tough.

When they are crammed 24,000 to a shed, they don't move much so not so muscle-y.  Not so old either.  35 days is average.  I have collected 28 day olds but there is nothing to them.  Usually for schools and the army.

I buy what is on promo or half price.  Like the yellow best now though.  The last few I bought have been very tasty.

Whatever...not many of us are buying chicken at the moment. I am!

Depends where you go.  Auchan are selling 2 for the price of 1, but yesterday in Carrefour they were all still the usual price, i.e. a euro dearer than HyperU.

I only buy Label Rouge, because I read a 'Que Choisir' report on the different labelling of chickens in France. The Label Rouge ones are kept in 'slightly' better conditions than the others and are not fed antibiotics.

According to the news sales are down by 30% but the prices in the last couple of weeks have been very high! I only buy when they are under €4 a kilo. I was hoping to stock up the freezer!

I buy these when they are on super promo ie, buy and eat today as tommorrow I die, I too find that the leg meat is tougher, but in our house the adults have the breast and the kids sulk if they cannot have the legs!

Gosh that takes me back, I always wanted the leg when I was a kid as I thought it meant I'd be getting the most ( huge appetite even then [:$]) and this suited my mom fine, but then I had my first taste of breast so to speak, and never looked back!

My fussy son refused to eat the brown meat, so guess who ends up with the legs again!

Examining the chicken selection chez Leclerc this a.m.(Monday

frequently being a good day for the odd bargin for those flexible of

taste, but how are they able to find free range chicken, raised in

France since every bird should be under cover by now? I think that we

should be told), I was disappointed to note that the price had not

shifted down a single sou since the crisis broke upon us. Moreover,

people seem to be buying it as usual, if the range on display were any

guide.

Is it my imagination or have the tweeters ceased plumeting Earthwards?

Or is it simply old news and it's just not making it into the blats any

longer?[8-)]

Well, a friend said to me on Friday that a friend of her daughter's blah blah blah (invent your own list) who works over, darn can't remember, Marseille way I think, said that they'd found about 20 dead birds in a small étang last week, but tests take a week or two, so we won't know till then.

It's certainly dropped out of the news.  Bit like the Pakistan earthquake.  Maybe it was just a flash in the pan.  Or maybe the media is in league with the chicken-growers.   If we don't get frightened, we'll keep eating chicken.  Everyone happy.  [:)]

.....................except, perhaps, the chickens [+o(]

Someone (friend of a friend) said the he had heard from his step

sisters that her husband's cousin's neighbour (he is a taxidermist) had

been told by his daughter's best friend that there were 20 dead

seagulls found at Calais, or something, but I could not find that on

any news media type thing, so it might be wrong.

All our hens have taken up playing the harmonica and  singing  negro spirituals. I'm quite worried about them.
Have they started building a glider, Jond?
Not as yet....what they have done (this afternoon, and to my

considerable surprise) is more-or-less tunnel out! The ground under the

coop itself is dry, and they have been dust bathing in it. In doing so,

they managed to work a sort of scraping around one of the supporting

posts. I found a couple of the smaller ones digging up my broad beans,

and it took me quite a while to work out what had come to pass. I have

now boarded up the gaps....
