Cream and Cheese

Hi,

Struggling to find:

Double cream - creme epaisse

Sour cream - creme aigre

Cottage cheese - fromage blanc (egoute)

Cream cheese - fromage a la creme (gras)

Any ideas??

For a so called food nation, France is pretty rubbish - game availability is like rocking horse guano.

Thanks.

Such an endearing sweeping statement. Have you not found any since you last asked in November last year?

Game will be available when the hunting season opens. Speak to your local butcher and he/she will be able to help.

If you're really desperate, try the freezer aisles in the supermarket. Even, Lidl sell it sometimes.

Oh marvellous, the cream question again. With bells on this time. [:D]

Double cream: creme fleurette, chilled dairy section.

Sour cream: creme fraiche, as above. If you want it sourer that that, make your own as per instructions above.

Cottage cheese: highly unlikely. Danone make it, it's called 'cottage cheese' and it's not widely available.

Cream cheese: St Moret, any supermarket. Also various own brand versions, usually cheaper (eg Tartidou, Casino)

Game: any butcher, but remember that it's both seasonal and regional (eg I don't rate your chances of getting chamois in Normandy). Acquaint yourself with the hunting calendar.

You will find France less rubbish if you stop trying to eat all the same things you would in the UK.

If you want a total rubbish shopping experience, try English supermarkets. I can hardly ever find andouilette there and the pear cider is nothing like poiré. [6]

If you tell us where you are, somebody might be able to help you find the things you need. Or do you travel around living on that thing that looks like a Dutch barge?

Intentionally Blank,

Yes - and it is as it was built in NL, and because it is not a yogurt pot, VAT on it and parts etc etc is zero rated.

Anyway, Douai at present.

I had searched the forums for "creams" and got pages of replies but nothing seemed to answer the Q.

Guess I have been spoiled by the game in the Oxford market!!  Looking forward to NL in the autumn where the "wild eten" is fantastic.
