I too stick to 4 wheels. The only legal bike I ever had was a BSA 11 (not 11G) and I spent 3 weeks in an R.A.F. hospital for it.

But that aside, if you want to tow owt. Have a look at these???

I have the 1150GS. Back in the summer I had an extended ride on afriends 850R and was amazed at the difference in the engines. The 1150 is agricultural whilst the 850 is much smoother and freer revving. The is a bit less power from the 850 as you would expect. I enjoyed the R, it feels much more compact than the GS but after the Pan wind protection maybe a bit of an issue. Even compared to the GS which has a fairly token screen the R was uncomfotable for me at anything above 120kph.

I do like the 1200 engine, less crude and rough than the 1150s and revs like the 850, but I'm thinking I'll burn the pipe and slippers in 2007 and get a KTM adventure

I'd heard that the 1150s were not a smooth as the 850s (smaller pistons, etc better balanced).  The R1200R is the only one they're producing now, but I've seen a pristine 2005 R850R with ABS etc.  Wind protection won't be a problem for me as most of our riding is going to be leisurely back road stuff.  I've also got a GS500 with a small screen fitted and it's OK windwise.  Besides, the fairing on the Pan makes it often too hot to ride in the summer.

Decisions, decisions.....

First to reply to the question, Ive had BMW's all my biker days (58 in jan) and many makers have tried to copy bmw but never made it,

the BMW's are strong and made to last,  mine is the RT.100and I got it new almost 25 years ago pre that I had a few bmw, I think the best was a 750cc and after I sold it I was really sorry, hence just after I bought the B.MW I still have today, It was made for touring and not road racing and you cannot chuck it round bends like the triumph, etc.

I was talking to a biker a few days ago via the nett and I was saying out of all the bikes ive got I feel the velocette 200 is the one for these counrty roads,

it's not fast, it's shaft drive/water cooled and full of tin, ie panniers and leg shields, but it just seem's right for these lanes.

anyway back to BMW, not the cheapest bikes ever made but a good safe bike.

My old man had one of the 150s. Complete with the full screen. We used to go mushrooming on Hendon airfield, he was stationed at Hendon. He always promised that it would be mine when I was old enough, but he sold it!!! Nice bloke?

I used to watch the police from the driving school doing their high speed training on the airfield. It had been closed to flying, but not built on. The fastset I ever got was on my pushbike???

I passed my test on an LE despite the fact the back brake didn't work due to being full of oil from the shaft drive. To slow for anything, probably even slower than your average Mobylette (but certainly quieter).

I've had numerous BMWs and almost every other make as well. If I was looking for something for country lane bumbling that's economical, easy to live with and happy with a pillion, it would be a R80 of 1986/7 vintage.

My old man had a 350 Panther, one 'phtumpf' for each lamp post. We were at Topcliffe, Yorks and if we went up Sutton Bank I had to get off and push the blasted thing. I was about 7, but I will never foret that. Some time after that he had an S7, Mist Green with huge great fat balloon tryes, shaft drive, 500 inline twin. Not very fast, but quite impressive. It was after that he had the Valocette LE 150. Complete with hand gear change. All 3 had the hand gear change if I remember correctly. None of this mucking about with yer feet apart from the rear brake...

When I worked in London after I came out of the R.A.F. one of the other engineers had stopped at a set of lights and a motorcyclist pulled up in the lane beside him. As he came to a halt he just sat on the bike and fell over. It was quite a big bike and he couldn't move because his foot was still on the foot rest and trapped under the bike. He lay in the road convulsed with laughter? When my mate got the bike off him and stopped him laughing he got an explanation. The bloke had just taken the sidecar off the bike that morning. It had been there for years and as he stopped at the lights he forgot to put his foot down and fell over [:-))]!!! What a silly billy!!

Never smoked a pipe in my life, I don't own a pair of slippers and when the weathers warm enough to get out on my bike my posting rate will calm down.

I'ts cold, wet and grey, what else is there to do ?

I've been taking advantage of the few days off I have in the year and the crisp weather. I've been cycling, trail riding and/or out on the BMW everyday this week except Christmas day. Only cycling yesterday as I had to split some logs in the afternoon and now the house is too hot!
