Ok I have heard that as a photographer who specialises in  taking scenic and landscapes shots, that I wish to frame and sell via a market stall that I can register as an artist or something and pay little or no cotisations.

Is this true and if so does anyone have any information?

Thanks

To register as an "artist" in France you will need to meet fairly strict criteria. This normally means having recognised qualifications at degree level from an art college, or proving that you have performed as an "artist" for a large number of years and having your work judged by a panel of experts.

This is not easy to achieve, and most end up registering a micro enterprise.

There are, as you mention, enormous benefits to being registered as an artist in France, with 600€ a month in Prime available to help support yourself.

I'll try to speak to someone who I know who is a painter and sculptor and has managed to register, he did have help from an association in his commune which has regular exhibitions, but I also know another painter that found it impossible, blocked at every turn. In fact I know another artist, now that I come to think of it, I'll try them as well.

I would think that URSSAF, as ever, are the people to ask, I'll try and find out anyway.

Hello Chris, chris and others,

you can go to the adress below to have some informations about legal questions for artists

http://www.lamaisondesartistes.fr/pdf/journal%20du%20cnap.pdf

i am registered in the MDA (maison des artistes) and i don't pay cotisations, but 600 euros ???? are you sure ???? perhaps it's a family allowance gived by ASSEDIC ???  it' s not distributed by MDA, i think. And i'm OK with Chris: we are not beggars, and have two legs and two arms for working (and a brain, of course!). They can keep their money.....

bye,

Noizette

A friend of ours is an artist. He paints commission pieces but also country scenes that he then has transformed into greetings cards which he sells to his established outlets in the UK. He does not have an art degree, or any college diplomas, and has been able to register at the Maison des Artists (based in Paris I think?). There are certainly very good tax breaks for artists in France.

Would this just be artists as in those who produce pictures (of whatever sort) for display?

Or is there really, after all, a way for creative people to make money legally?    Selling cards, cushions, lavender bags, and other handmade things without ludicrous amounts of cotisations?

It definitely sounds too good to be true!

Well call me an old cynic again [:-))]

But I did think when Chris mentioned the €600 euros that any Brit with a box brownie would now try and convince the French authorities that they were the next David Bailey![:D]

Good evening Chris,  I noted that you end your messages with the  information ( Working for wildlife & birds in France )  You may be interested to learn thta for the past 4 years usually at the begining of October we have an Ospray visiting our lake for 2 to 3 days.  This year we had one for the first time in April and then again last week .  They are amazing to watch as they hover over our lake and then seem to tuck their wings in and drop like a stone into the water.  I hold my breath to see if they are coming up, as it seems to be a big effort to release themselves from the water, especially if one of our fish has not been keeping their eyes skywards and ended up flying for the first ( and last ) time

Kind regards
