Frank
Hi everyone, especially anyone who has lived in France for some time. I am trying to find out if you can buy traditional christamas crackers in France ( I didn't see any last year, but I may have been looking in the wrong place) I have a friend who is visiting soon, but she cannot put them in her luggage in the hold, due to the increased terrorist activities and security and I am still waiting to hear if she can use the post! We're hosting a traditional english christmas day for our french friends and their family, (we have been invited to spend a traditional french christmas with them) so they are quite an important part of proceedings!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance[:)]kimberly dept
WendyG
HiNo, I have never seen crackers sold in France, although I am sure there will be specialist shops selling them together with the usual Brit "necessities".In a local town, Loudon, department 96, there is a small shop which apart from French fashions, sells a range of English goods, and I am sure they would be prepared to obtain crackers if asked. They told me they could organise for anything to be brought over. At least you are starting in good time. The daughter of some friends in Fuengirola does a roaring trade in crackers which she makes herself. They are very nice indeed. She spends the summer making them.I have always brought my own over in the boot of the car. Maybe this is now illegal. The French find them a mild curiosity.Good luck.Wendy
Cassis
Why should it be illegal to bring Xmas crackers over in your car? They are less dangerous than a box of matches. Ditto, why can't you put them in your baggage in the hold of the aircraft?Has the world really gone completely and utterly do-lally? I know it's going that way but I didn't realise we had arrived there already! [blink]
TWINKLE
Never seen them in french shops. There used to be a Marks & Spencers in Toulouse and I would get them there. Then when that closed my visitors would bring them over for me - but obviously you can't do that now. Have you tried Tescos on-line? Maybe they will send them overseas. I've got a few crumpled ones left over from last Christmas If you want?
Cassis
I don't believe it. Show me the list!Even the liquids and gels that are banned from hand luggage are allowed in the hold, so what's suddenly changed on the cracker front? They aren't on any list of explosive devices I've ever seen.Hang on - I get it - Kimberley is having us on to prove we're CRACKERS!!! Missy
Hi everyone, especially anyone who has lived in France for some time. I am trying to find out if you can buy traditional christamas crackers in France ...... Many thanks in advance[:)] kimberly dept 17
NO crackers in France. But what you may find are chocolate sweets which have little bangers integrated in their colourful foil wrappings. Ask for 'chocolats avec pétards' wherever you happen to shop (though they won't be on sale until much nearer the time about November...)Ask for crackers to be sent over from UK by kind friends/relatives unless you can buy online from Tesco, M&S, John Lewis etc..... I send some to my French family who in return send me these chocolates. We've done so for 25+years and have had no problems over such parcels. Frank
No I'm not having you all on!!! Seriously, my sis in law contacted the airport (I would have just slung 'em in the suitcase!!) and they have told her she cannot put them in her case and then into the hold!!! (something to do with explosives.) funy when searches for said products and delivery to france include airmail[Www]!!!!! I am trying to convince her to turn a blind eye to the phone call and plead ignorance!! So we shall see, failing that, I will get my mum to post some[:D]Thanks everyone for your replies/suggestions! Funny how we are not having the same probs with the mince pies and pigs in blankets, ah well, there you go!Kimberly 17 Might try for a turkey from sainsburys next!! Cassis
I'm with you - I would put them in the suitcase anyway. Christmas crackers (like matches) are definitely not on the US airlines list of prohibited explosive devices! Fireworks are, and cig lighters.Who's the nutty airport? Maybe they're 'avin' a laarf! Tell her to ask the airline instead.
opas
Christmas crackers are definatly not allowed on Ryanair, I know because there was a statement issued to that effect before last Christmas. My dad bought some for me , so he could bring them for christmas day. He was asked at the check in desk if he had any in his bags. He hadn`t as I had pre warned him not to bother.hubbybrought them in the car at Easter when he visited the UK and mine are now in the suitcase under the bed. Any bidders? Rob Roy
Some friends brought us some for last year - our French neighbours thought they were great, they had never seen them before. Thanks for the reminder to get organised to ask for some more to be brought this year by someone in a car!
Vienne_Billygoats
Hi JetlagCrackers and xmas pudding were being sold in the English section of our local Intermarche last year. Had already had a delivery from the UK soI did not need to test them, but might give them a go this year. Our French friends loved the our crackers but I did not have the heart to get them to try xmas pudding.Kay

andyh4
The problem with crackers is, as I understand it, that while not specifically classed as explosives - the small snapper contains a small / minute amount of material that is. If baggage is subjected to an electronic sniffer, then (metaphorically) the cavalry come riding in with guns drawn - so the airlines ban crackers. Will
They do very nice ones at La Maison / Maisons du Monde shops. The web site only has furniture, but http://www.maisonsdumonde.com/magasins/ shows where the shops are, which have loads of nick-nacks as well. Dick Smith
In fact if you visit La Maison in St Hilaire du Harcouet at any time during any school holiday you stand a good chance of finding me there watching Julie examine every article in the place. Alternatively Monsieur Phillipe in the bar over the road is very understanding...Actually, we now spend almost as much time in Casa in Vire... Coco
Just had a look at the christmas cracker shop - love the idea of the musical crackers - what a laugh that could be, especially after a little too much vin rouge!!!
