Hooligans

Not the first time Marseille has had to deal with english football hooligans, sadly they are having to deal with them again, along with russian hooligans. Poor Marseille has always had a bit of bad reputation, but this goes way beyond and is disgusting.

All those arrested should probably be sent to the Chateau d'If and left there for a few weeks in the heat of summer to 'cool' off and dry out and maybe learn to behave themselves.

Will the english team get banned? Could well..... do I care.......no!

With France still (controversially) in an offical 'state of emergency' the Police has enough to protecting the public from possible attack without having to bother with these thugs.

They  the unacceptable face of Nationalism; storm troopers for bully-boy Boris's blather..

Don't you people read the dark net ? This is all part of Putin's plan to destabilise the west. He would love a Brexit so that EU is weaker and he can smooth his way through western Europe.

I have friends that were in Marseille over the weekend (French not English) and they got caught up in the confrontations. They were in a bar with English fans and having a laugh and a sing song, no problems what so ever, until a group of people came in with their faces covered and started fucking up the place. Not long after the police arrived and basically hit anyone wearing an England shirt.

Do not believe everything you read in the news papers. Yes, there are some meat heads looking for a fight, probably a couple of hundred, but the other 40,000 are there to have a good time. And don't forget that when Marseille was given the England v Russia match everyone said that there would be trouble.

The Russians...you just wait for the World Cup.

You haven't seen anything yet. If Russia meet the Ukraine in the 16's there will be deaths.

Are these the same Policiers Municipeaux that are on strike for the duration of the football tournament ?

No La Police Municipale is basically a force in towns that deals with things like parking and small incivilities  not the same body as La Police Nationale which deals with crime, or the CRS which deals with riots

La Gendarmarie which many British people may meet as they live in villages first work in country areas.

The Mayor of Béziers made controversy last year by arming his Police Municipale

What I would like to know is why football 'fans' (I use the term

loosely) need to be escorted to and from the venues and then the

supporters segregated when at the ground?  This never happens with rugby

or cricket and I have never ever seen any crowd trouble at these games.

I think the reason for this may be rooted in culture and also in the large crowds that football attracts compared to other sports. This results in the small percentage of idiots reaches a critical mass that can cause trouble. It does seem that certain clubs have much more aggressive supporters than others. When I first moved south to London in the 1960s I remember being surprised at the high number of arrests at every Millwall game even though there were comparatively low attendances. I was used to the figures for Rangers and Celtic but the arrests in these matches was less than the Millwall figures despite attendances being three or four times higher.

The vast majority of football supporters are just as well behaved as the supporters of other sports. It is the small minority that give it a bad reputation.

I'm not sure that holds true.  I've been fortunate enough to attend many rugby matches at Wembley, Twickers and Stade de France, all with crowds of 70 000+ and never a moment's trouble, in fact I never felt safer in a big crowd.

One time at the end of  an England/Ireland match, the chap next to me turned and said 'well played, good game' and shook my hand.  I suppose it helped that Ireland had just one but a nice gesture all the same.

At my school you either supported Millwall or West Ham, or if really brave, Crystal Palace with many vicious fights between rival tribes.   I couldn't stand football even then so if I was asked who I supported (none of the above was not an option when you're 11 or 12) I just replied with whatever the questioner wanted to hear.
