Gabe
Does anybody know if it will be possible to grow an avocado tree that will produce fruit in the Gers. Have to be honest I have never grown one anywhere before and don't know if this is an unrealistic dream ! Any help....
Mpprh
HiI've visited avocado plantations in N Australia.I've never seen them down here by the Med.So the answer is " I'm not sure, but I doubt it".Of course, if it was in a pot and spent the winter in a heated greenhouse, it might be possible ?And if it was possible, Mrs MPPRH would have tried it ?Peter
Deby
I have wondered about that one myself. We certainly have warm weather for lemons and other fruits, but how that translates to Avocados not so sure. I remember the climate in SE Australia being not unlike SE France, but then I really have no idea. Will look in RHS book, but it probably only relates to Northern Hemisphere.Deby
Iceni
They require a totaly frost free environment - they are tropical plants. In Africa we used to pick them from the trees and let them ripen.Citrus fruits can take some frost, I gather Avocado's cannot.
Gabe
Thanks everybody. I think that you are right about the RHS book only really relating to the Northern Hemsiphere.I was thinking about possibly trying in a Poly Tunnel, but I wouldn't intend to heat it, so probably no good anyway. Iceni
Avocados are huge trees, I don't think a polytunnel would cope with it - shame though as I would like to have tried it.
