Pepper seeds

Just bought some glorious red and green peppers, (are they called capsicum?) and upon deseeding I wondered if I should keep the seeds for next year, would that be possible or is there some strange reason why commercially grown ones won't work?

You can keep them and sow them next year, but they may not produce exactly the same kind of peppers as the ones you bought.  Many commercial seeds are specially bred F1 and sometimes even F2 varieties.  The seeds of these will not produce true copies of the fruits - but that is not to say they won't produce good fruit.
