Hanging Baskets in winter

In anticipation of the first frost, I asked the gardener to take down the hanging baskets and store them for the winter.  Then he suggested that I put some miniature variagaged (sp) ivy in them.  Any other ideas folks for things which could survive the winter and provide a bit of colour?

Winter flowering heathers are always a good bet, together with other small foliage plants like some varieties of Euonymus.

As has been said, winter Pansies are good and you could use Bellis. In protected positions you might get away with hardy Cyclamen, even the large varieties.

I've got a book called Container Gardening through the Year and that suggests a mix of  varigated ivy, Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Scarletta' (which is evergeen) and winter cherry ( Solanum pseudocapsicum). Another mixture is Cyclamen persicum Giganteum with Pick-a-Back plant ( Tolmiea menzeisii).

The photos look pretty, but whether the plants are ontainable is another thing!
