Getting rid of hazel

Anyone know the best way of getting rid of some unwanted hazel? I've got three or four of them growing on a steep bank and they completely block what should be a great view. I cut them back hard each year but that's just stimulating them into stronger growth, so we've decided to bite the bullet and attempt to get rid of them altogether. I suppose it's either grubbing them up or poison. Stump killer might work, but each plant has about forty stumps of 2 to 8 centimetres across. Any suggestions?

You are really going to have to grub them out, but be aware, their roots may be what is holding that steep bank together and stopping it either slumping into your garden, or if facing the other way, stopping your garden disappearing down the slope.
