Le martin-pêcheur
Hi,We are about to register our gite as a business. There are only two of us and our cat, small outgoings so no need or desire for large income from gite.Any ideas as to whether we would be better as Micro enterprise or E.I.?Any sites featuring relevant information would be appreciated or contacts for specialists in the field. Thanks in advance,Tony and Sue
Frogslegs
Just goes to show how many registered gite owners there are our there?? Micro enterprise is pretty painless, and filling in you tax forms will be easy, but a smattering of French is essential when visiting all the different departments.bonne chance

You seem to be talking about a gite in the singular and from your description in your first paragraph you seem to be in much the same position as ourselves. We are not reistered as anything. We simply fill in the tax forms as appropriate, it is pretty much a one line entry of the gross figure for the year, and pay up when required. Am I missing something here?Liz (29)

Frogslegs
We have just one gite. But if you are earning money then it is a business....however little income you recieve! hence you have to inform the chambre de commerce. If you are not paying cotisations then you are not paying towards the health system?

Moorejw
AFAIK there is no obligatory registration for gites. You complete a tax return for revenue fonciere, i.e. income from property and pay your taxes, the authorities then work out your contribution to healthcare on your income. If you earn below the allowance for your circumstances you will have nothing to pay and also may get a reduction on your taxe d'habitation/fonciere.It is well worth registering with your local tourist office, as they will then provide you with free local guides/maps etc. in quantity. There are two levels of registration, the first costs about 13 euros p.a. and is just putting you on their accommodation list, the second costs more, and they will come and inspect your accommodation and award epis as appropriate. In either case they like to know about locally available accommodation and may well send enquiries your way.Angie

If you earn below the allowance for your circumstances you will have nothing to pay and also may get a reduction on your taxe d'habitation/fonciere.Just a couple of things to add. Yes, if one lives here you have to declare your takings from your gîtes(s) along with any other earning here or indeed globally. As far as health cover is concerned, if you are not registered at the C de Com, thereby paying cotisations to all and sundry and you wish to have health cover, you should go along to CPAM. The impôts will not be involved in this, in the first instance. You should take yourself down to the CPAM offices armed with the normal amount of guff and then providing you qualify though all the regs, you should get health cover through the CMU. This has been discussed many times on the Health threads. As far as registering gîtes, it is not necessarily obligatory. In the past, the tax office have tended to think that around 3-4 gîtes would be non professional and 4 plus was, this also counted for the C de Com as well. This ruling can really vary between depts. Now with the way things are going, you could find neighbouring depts saying, that as your only source, your gîtes are professional and as you have 1 plus gîtes you must go to the C de Com and register. Then in the next dept, they are still not interested in you apart from tax declaration. One day soon I am sure it will all be regimented and regulations put in place for the whole of France It is well worth registering with your local tourist office, as they will then provide you with free local guides/maps etc. in quantity. In either case they like to know about locally available accommodation and may well send enquiries your way.Epis themselves, can only be awarded by reps of Gîtes de France and the tourist offices around here will not entertain anyone without a grading from the likes of G de Fr, Clévacances etc.

France Direct
Best Wishes ~ Ken Austin
www.francedirect.net
I agree with all that has been said above. You don’t have to register a Gîte business or pay cotisations. But beware the law is changing and this may not be the case for much longer. You do have to declare your income to the l’Impot however. My advice would be to go and see your Maire, they will be able to help you with everything you need to get you started. You may also have to pay Taxe de Sejour which not all Maire’s charge. Equally as important as registration is ensuring that you have adequate public liability insurance, especially since the new swimming pool laws came into force. Owens88
We have just visited an accountant who advised us that it would be more 'tranquil' to register and pay a different set of taxes, probably lower overall. The defining factor seemed to be how many weeks we are there and how many we let out.Good luck
