We have a family-owned Chateau with 40 acres on the border of Picardy and Normandy. By car it is 4.5 hours from London, 2.5 from Paris and it is 5.5 miles from the sea. It sits on the edge of a village and is surrounded by countryside. The family visits infrequently – maybe several months in the summer and once a month during the winter. You will only be working for a private family; there will be no commercial activities (b&b, hotel etc).

We are looking for an individual or couple to manage the property long-term. Management of the house will entail:

Cleaning the house, including preparing beds for arrivals.

Shopping and cooking the odd meal, and there is no waiting.

Mowing the lawn and ground maintenance.

Giving access to builders / plumbers / electricians etc to the house.

Managing the woods (about 20 acres).

Felling trees, cleaning pathways, cutting up fallen trees etc.

The successful applicants will have to speak fluent or close-to-fluent French and have lived in France in the past. They must have a EEC passport as we will not sponsor a work-permit. The couple need to be hard-working and trustworthy as much of the work will be done without supervision. The objective is for the couple to live and work at the property for many years.

In remuneration you will receive in return:

Free rental of one-bedroom cottage on the property and land around it.

A modest salary.

Other benefits will include:

Generous holiday time.

Usage of a large ‘kitchen garden’ to grow fruits, vegetables & flowers for your consumption.

Access to land for your chickens etc.

There are stables so you could bring your horse.

You are welcome to bring your dog or cat.

The position will not start before May 2010 and starting dates will be flexible.

So if you are approaching (semi-) retirement and would like a change in lifestyle and would love to live in the French countryside, please get in contact.

I am based in London and would like to meet any interested parties. Please send me a PM and we can take it from there.

Thanks, Earnest Kingsley.
