Could someone look at these photos and give me some clues.....

So,this dirty pool I have been asked to re-start....

Well, I got the power on in the pump room, and its.....well, I havent the foggiest TBH. The problem is, I dont know about pools. The pool at the gites I looked after was a wee inflatable thing with a pump/filter that had an entry and an exit and that was that. This is.....more complex, shall we say?

I asked the current tenants of the pump room but they were little help.

an overview....

Two sand filters (I figured that much out!). Looks like one is for the surface skimmers at one end of the pool, the other I believe is for a central drain and maybe a connection for a pool hoover. Both should be running at the same time, I would imagine?

The hell is this?

I would guess its some kind of auto-chlorination set-up? There is a wee sensor in-line with one of the pumps....

which operates a solenoid valve in the grey pipes, which I assume will allow chlorine into the system if required? Any clues how this works? how I start and calibrate it?

There are a couple of pumps missing. There is a sloar heating array outside and I assume one would circulate water through there. The other is labelled "jetstream"....some kind of swimming-on-the-spot currant perhaps?

Transformers....

No idea what they power.

There is a pile of dead pumps and hoovers in the corner....

Any ideas?

Does this set-up look ok-ish? or should I get a pool expert / run away?

Lovely bats - try not to disturb them.

In picture 2, what is that white thing hanging down under the furthermost yellow box?

You have a close up of it later but I cannot read all of the words - one word I can make out is "Instructions"

When all else fails RTFM

Yes, it says "instructions" however, it is incredibly vague and basically consists of "run filter for x hours per day, backwash filter after x hours of use, keep ph between x and y, drain this and that for winter"

The filtration system, I reckon I can figure out once I find where each pipe goes, however stuff like the transformers and the chlorination system I have no idea about.

Aside from frost damaged pumps etc, I see no reason why it wont all work. It obviously worked well enough until the place was left empty, and nothing has changed in that time.

Have you got any money to spend? Yes that was a chlorine tablet feeder, it's obviously a large pool, multi user? if so a proper chlorine dosing pump and Ph acid dosing pumps are needed if compliance with DASS regs is to be observed. The Certikin boxes (yellow) could be transformers for lighting in the pool, can't tell with the covers on but from the state of them you would be very brave to switch them on.  How many floor drains does the pool have, one would be dangerous two is safer. if there is just one look to getting an anti entrapment device fitted. Likewise skimmers. the pumps should fetch a little bit at the scrappy.

Where do these jobs find you? [:)]

Thanks.

It was for paying guests but the new owner is keeping the place as a private residence so the pool will now be private use only, so less regulations to worry about.

The theory about the transformers makes sense. There are 3 lights in the pool wall. Will check it out but as you say, looks like the damp has got at the boxes and maybe the internals. (pump room is underground so very humid)

I believe there is only 1 drain, but I have not found it yet! The pool was left uncovered for a good few years so it was impossible to see the bottom. I have been pumping it out with surface pumps, but am now left with I would guess about a cubic meter of green sludge in the deep end that is too thick to pump....I will have to get busy with a bucket and a shovel to fully empty it.

Next question - where can I find square, white, plain mosaic tiles, about 2cm to a side? The other day I did the tour of the diy sheds, tile specialists and pool shops to no avail. I need about 3m2 to complete repairs. I would have thought this would be simple, but nobody could help me or give me any pointers.

A competent guy who is not scared to take on and learn from new challenges outside of his experience will allways be in demand, all the more so in France.

Who says I am competent?[:P]

You are spot-on though. Word soon spreads around and when people need things done, they call me.

I am quite broadly experienced and nothing I do is massively difficult. The things I don't know about, I learn up on via internet, books, forums, asking others...whatever works. My skills expand a little further each time, which gets me more and more work.
