Increasing Chemical Hardness.

Advice please.

I have a 50,000 litre, liner, swimming pool, installed in

2008.  To check the water balance I have

progressed from the Acucheck trutest to the Scuba + and now the LaMotte Colour

Q 7 plus.  Throughout Chlorine and Ph have

been within normal parameters and the water has been clear with no signs of

other problems.  Despite this I have,

recently, become obsessed with Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness.  In May the Alkalinity reading was 77ppm I now

have it up to 87ppm.  The Calcium Hardness

readings are as follows date and ppm.:

Throughout this period I have added 12 Kg of TH+ obtained

from three different local pool shops so I estimate that Calcium Hardness

should have increased by up to 160 ppm. 

I have checked our tap water 99 ppm and rainwater from the water but 30

ppm.

I suggest you ignore the information you are reading. With a vinyl pool hardness is of little interest. Alkalinity likewise, if you increase your alkalinity your pH will begin to creap up too and then you'll spend more money and more time buying acid to bring it back down again. Most published information assumes you have a concrete,tiled or plaster finished pool where hardness and alkalinity are of paramount interest. I run my pool with alkalinity at around 40ppm and I had very hard water that I have now bought under control.
