social security vs. private health insurance

We are moving permanently to France next year and are trying to plan health cover. Both of us have taken early retirement and will be in receipt of works pensions. State pensions are five years away. Can anyone advise as to whether it is cheaper to pay social security contributions plus a private "top up" or to opt for totally private health cover? All information received so far suggests one of these two options but is very confusing and not particularly helpful.

I presume that you will be entitled to an E106 obtained from DSS Newcastle. This is issued depending on your national insurance contributions and is valid for up to 2 years. You then take your E106 to CPAM in France who register you.You are then entitled to health care under French system ie 70% reembursement etc You can then if you wish take out top up medical insurance to cover you for the rest. When E106 runs out you need to contribute to French social security system 8% of income after certain allowances.
You are no longer allowed to take out private medical insurance for the full amount of costs incurred you must contribute to French social secuity system.
