Peeing In a Pot!

How can I put this politely? Both myself and my wife visited our doc this morning, and have both been sent for blood tests, when we got home we noticed on both our printouts, that the doc is calling for an urine sample test as well. In the UK you would be given a pot at the surgery to do the business in, so to speak, but what happens here in France? Do we just supply our own container, or should we maybe ask at the pharmacy for a UK sized pot, to do the deadly deed in? Feedback from anyone who has had to pee in a pot in the past greatly received!

Your generaliste or laboratoire will give you a pot ("recipient"). You can provide the sample on the spot or at home. If doing the biz at home, you need to rush it to the laboratoire asap. They like it oven-fresh, as it were. Wait until you have to supply No. 2s and they give you the poo-sticks.

Many thanks for all the witty replies. We are now the proud owners of two pots, which are primed and ready for action. The nice lady at the pharmacy advised us they are called 'flacons', so next time I need to make a donation, I will know where to aim. The only trouble is we have to be at the blood extraction office tomorrow morning at 7am [:-))], it only opens 2 mornings a week in the village, and runs from 7-8.30am.

Not totally related to this thread, but rather than start another, can anybody advise about blood tests and x-rays. More precisely where do the blood test results go, are they sent to our doctor, ourselves or do we have to go back and pick them up personally? Also with x-rays, will I have to wait for them to be processed, or do I go back at a later date and pick them up?

The lab should send a copy of the results to you and another to your GP.

X-rays should be handed to you before you leave.

Our lab always sends us a copy of blood test results in the post - next day delivery.  The girl on reception always asks 'double a Dr.......?' , I say yes and a copy goes to whoever issued the prescription.

X-rays are usually processed while you wait and the films handed over to you there and then.

EDIT:  Snap, Clair.....[;-)]
Normally you should not eat or drink before a blood test so no brekkie or cups of tea until you get back home.
It depends on which test is required. I have regular tests, one of which has to be done "à jeun" for a correct reading.

If unsure, ask your GP if you should be "à jeun" (on an empty stomach).

Just read this thread and mentioned it to OH.

She told me that someone she knew was faced with the same problem in the UK.  She washed out a small flask-sized bottle of whisky, did the deed and put it in her shopping bag.  En route to the lab, and in a shop somewhere, it was stolen!!!![:)]

I am reminded of the lady who on taking her dog to the vet was asked to return in a week with a urine sample from him.

In the next few days she spent their walks trying to get one, flask in hand but the dog was increasingly embarrassed by it all and became secretive and furtive, she became more and more desperate as she stalked her dog's private moments.

Eventually she returned to the vets with a small sample. A different vet saw her dog. She offered the sample to him. "Whats this" he asked. She explained and he threw the bottle in his waste bin commenting "How disgusting".

Wow, that was quick Clair/SD many thanks, and I must say the French system sounds pretty slick, when it comes to dealing with their test results.

Benjamin, the doc did mention they were both fasting tests, but thanks for mentioning it, I guess that will mean I have to stay off the red wine until we come home. Only joking, honest, I don't start until at least 9am [blink]

The de luxe version.

I went into the analysis clinic this morning to ask for a container to provide a sample. I was given a small rectangular plastic container with a cardboard lid with the clinic's details on.

I got to the door and thought this can't be right for a sample so I turned around and found the receptionist smiling at me. I asked if this was the correct container and she took the top off to reveal a round screw top container for the pee-pee, a sterile wipe, a label to complete and very detailed instructions on the preparation for and on the how to take a sample.

Ahead of the curve here again in the Vendée.

I also have to have regular blood tests and have had to give several 'samples' too. BUT they were not 'oven fresh' because they had to be the complete lot over 24 hours. I was supplied with 2 X 2 litre bottles!

They were nearly enough and was the specialist ever impressed!
