New to the Forum so might get the format wrong! We will be goingto live in France in September and have a car already at our house there. However we would like to keep a car at our home in Scotland to use when there from time to time. We can keep it in a locked garage. Does anyone know if we will be able to get insurance. One firm I contacted today said that since we will not be resident in the Uk that they couldn't insure the car for us. Thanks

I have been led to believe that Adrian Flux and (surprisingly) Direct Line will cover non-residents. In either case you need to ring up rather than try to do it on line.

Best ring a decent local broker, they are in a position to tell you  what is and isn't good insurance.  For instance, Direct line and SAGA will not accept billing form any one but their "approved" suppliers list.  Not a big problem unless their "approved supplier" can't replace a door glass for 2 weeks.

I fear you are going to find this it difficult. Temporary insurance for the periods you are there might be an option but to keep the car UK road legal it needs the MOT and tax keeping up and for the latter temporary policies are generally not acceptable for obtaining a tax disc.

Also temporary insurance will never show up on the MIB database so you would run the constant risk of being stopped by the police when you get pinged by the ANPR cameras.

Frankly I think you'd do better to sell the car and use the money, along with what you save in road tax, MOT, insurance, depreciation etc. to hire a car when you are there.

I shall have a word with a very good friend of mine who's been a broker all his life.  I have many such friends, I could see if they would deal with things like this for all members of the forum if needed.  Never know, there may be a bit of discount available.
A quick Google found, amongst many others......

http://www.carinsurancequotesonline.co.uk/car-insurance-for-uk-non-residents/
That site has been produced (along with many others that have very similar wording, basically replacing particular elements with synonyms) purely to attract Google and advertising revenue. It contains nothing of any relevance to the OP, I'm afraid.

As an aside, as of this year, any vehicle registered in the UK has to be continuously insured (or else SORNed).
Wrong way round I'm afraid, the Stuart Collins deal requires the vehicle to kept out of the UK for 11 months per year.
Stuart Collins is a specialist broker, and has other policies that may fit the bill, from what I have read.
Never could figure out how that worked and how it addressed the 6 month rule [blink]
So long as the vehicle does not spend more than 6 months in any one (other country) country, then maintenance of a UK registration is quite conceivable, I suppose ...

Just spoken to a broker friend of mine.  He already does this for a friend of his that lives in France, it's not straight forward and costs a bit more but it can be done.

His contact details are

Shaun Evans.

1 Church Walk.

Tarporley.

01829 733866.

Bon chance.

S Collins do policies "both ways round"!

From their website.......

Vehicles kept in UK by persons living outside UK.

We are pleased to arrange cover for clients living outside UK who require a UK rated policy for the car they keep at their address here.

Not quite sure how to reply to all who responded to my request for information re the car insurance. But anyway thank you to all who did reply to my request.

I am sure there will be other matters for which I will need advice from people more experienced than myself and this was a good positive start. Thanks a lot.
