There is a programme update today for Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you dont get a prompt the mise à niveau can be done manually using the drop down menu on the Help/Aide Tab.

The rather insipid post above received the following comment from a fellow poster;

Quote:"Or there was your expert view about MS Security Essentials, where you were poitely(sic)  informed to 'butt out' unless you had anything useful to contribute, other than the fact there had been an update which everyone with MSSE would have receieved(sic)  anyway. But as a qualified mining engineer, this also includes a comprehensive knowledge of software.

The original post referred to a programme update to the Version installed on 29/06/2007. As of  20/07/2010 that Version has been deinstalled and for three days now I have been running the recently installed Version 2.

Microsoft Security Essentials Version 2.0.375.0

AntiMalware Client Version 2.0.6509.0

Engine Version 1.1.6004.0

Due to the Version 2 still being exclusively in english it is not available as yet on the Microsoft France Server.

I looked and am still on version 1, despite getting updates from the English language site, and having automatic updates enabled. I removed and reinstalled the program (downloaded this morning from Microsoft GB), and still have:

Microsoft Security Essentials Version:  1.0.1963.0

Antimalware Client Version: 2.1.6805.0

Engine Version: 1.1.6004.0

Antivirus definitions: 1.87.348.0

Antispyware definitions: 1.87.348.0

Any ideas on how to, or even whether I should, get version 2?

The MSE Version 2 is based on Version 1 with improvements; strictly speaking it is a Beta only open in english to USA and Israel. ( If you remember the original Version  Beta was developed in Israel); also available in China in Basic Chinese and Brazil in Portuguese. It uses the same definition updates as the curerent worldwide available Version 1. If you have a french OS it will not install over the Version 1 due to a language conflict; effectively rolling back and leaving the Version 1 in place, the french Version must therefore be uninstalled first. I am led to believe from the forums that it will install over an existing english Version 1 but obviously have no personal experience of this. There is a 32 bit and a 64 bit version. The download of the software requires a Microsoft Connect Identity. This can be obtained at the following link.

https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=11&ct=1279802810&rver=6.0.5286.0&wp=MBI_SSL&wreply=https:%2F%2Fconnect.microsoft.com%2Fdefault.aspx%3Flc%3D1036&lc=1036&id=64416

There is a rumour that one must use a HotMail or Windows Live Mail  address; this is rubbish as any email address can be used, I for example use my libertysurf address.

After getting a Microsoft Connect Identity and activating the connection with your ID goto the following site.

https://connect.microsoft.com/directory/accepting-bugs

Click on the right hand option at top of page and a new page will open with all the MS Beta Programmes on offer; scroll down until you see MSE and click on that which will finally get you to the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta Download page.

This is the page open at moment under pachapapa but with PC cookies enabled.

https://connect.microsoft.com/securityessentials

Be patient it works a treat. There is more info on the exclusive MSE forum at:

Will, I think it is important to stress V-2 is a BETA limited release version "available to genuine Windows users on a first come, first serve basis until the allotted spots for the beta have been reached".

The definitions are the same for both versions and if you're happy with version 1, then stick with it until the Beta version is finalised, unless of course you wish to join the beta testers.

Some people are experiencing problems with the beta version, not experienced with version 1.

Tuesday night bought two security updates of interest:

1) The MSRT programme now includes a cure for one of the principal Microsoft Security Essentials false programme pop-ups. I personally found this irritating when searching USA sites during the Chilean Mining Disaster. More info at link below.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/mmpc/archive/2010/11/09/msrt-tackles-fake-microsoft-security-essentials.aspx

2) The Microsoft Security Essentials Beta has been updated, the update includes various additions to the GUI. The update is covered by KB2461287. But little info on google as yet but a Spanish language blog does already give full information. The blog entry contains several interface illustrations.

Oh the Cariocas are also up to speed, in portuguese but Windows in english.

I have used MS Security Essentials since about two years, I think. I started because I had had troubles with AVG. At that time MS Sec. Ess. was tested to be both very good and to have a very small impact on the computers it is used on, ie scanning etc. doesn't slow your pc down too much.

I recently read though that the package has slipped down to an almost bottom position in recent tests. I wanted to put a link to the article, but cannot find it again.

I will stick to MS Security Essentials: years of reading tests on this sort of thing have taught me that no package stays at the top all the time.

I have had no trouble, but then I don't visit risky websites, and it is true that the programme does its job quietle in the background without slowing down the machine. This is very important to me.
