Bounty Baby young Labrador X, Deux-Sèvres

Bounty is one of the many to be abandoned during the holiday period, above at the Niort refuge.

On Sunday I went and got him out as they were not going to keep him long.  He was originally found as a pup and was adopted from the Niort refuge in February.  The vet has put his date of birth as beginning of October 2006, so he is not even ten months old yet.

On Sunday evening I noticed his left back leg was not as developed as the other and could see what looked like a scar on his thigh.  Looking in his papers it was found that he had had a femoral operation at the beginning of May with a control X-ray and removal of the pin (if that's the word in English, broche in French) due in July.  He was abandoned on 1st July !

These photos were taken yesterday evening and you can probably see the scar on his thigh.

This morning our vet has neutered him and removed the pin, so he'll soon be all set to go !  He is used to being with children and a cat and I can confirm he likes cats.  He had probably never seen so many at once until he came here and he kisses them through the separation.  When he came back from the vet's, still a bit dazy, the first thing he did was go to say hello to the cats before lying down on his blanket.

He obviously hasn't had much discipline and attention (contact) in the past, but is eager to learn and has already made progress in the few days he has been here.  Poor Bounty hasn't had a good start in life, but if someone would like to give a lively, affectionate young lad a chance, I don't think they will be disappointed.  He can be left alone without any problems (probably been used to that) and doesn't make any noise or chew anything up which is a very positive side in such a young dog.

He is of course microchipped and fully vaccinated including rabies.

Christine, I am confused - if he was adopted from the refuge in February, are you saying he has since been abandoned by the adopters?  In which case, the refuge must have their details surely.  I expect I have misread things.

Gorgeous chap anyway and hope he finds a good home.

Thank you for your message Pouyade, I have answered it.

Yes Chrissie, it maybe wasn't very clear, but someone adopted Bounty in February and then came back to the Niort refuge and abandoned him there on 1st July, so I have all his papers.

These were taken yesterday evening.  He's getting more and more obedient and sociable.  I don't think he'd hardly met another dog before, didn't seem to know how to react towards them.  He also barked at the horses on the first day, but doesn't bother about them anymore.  He still has a lot to learn, but as he's so young, it doesn't take long.

These were taken yesterday evening, still not quite understood how the lead works, but getting better !

                             and such a lovely face

Refuge Forbach in the east of France have offered to take him      http://www.spa-forbach.eu/

It's a remarkable refuge and they rescue a lot of pets and find good homes for them.  The young rescuers are busy organising a co-voiturage to Paris and then direction Forbach by TGV !  It's incredible what they do.   [:D]

We are full up and I know he will be fine at Forbah and certainly will find a good home, but would have obviously preferred him to be able to stay in this region.  So if anyone would like to have him, please let me know, otherwise probably next weekend he will be off across France.

Well, Bounty didn't go off across France finally.  He was adopted yesterday by a lovely family near Nantes with two children, two cats and a garden.  They said today that he has soon settled in there, still needs a bit more training, but learns quickly.

They should be sending me some photos soon.   [:)]

Bounty has bounced back.  The husband had regrettably to return him yesterday.  He was very sad about it and couldn't understand his wife's sudden reaction after everything seemed so fine.  Maybe she didn't have enough authority to deal with a young and lively dog because he didn't seem to have done anything really bad.  He had chased the cats a bit outdoors and made their little boy fall down while playing.

On the good side, they confirmed he could be left on his own without making any noise or damaging anything and is clean in the house.  He is also very good in the car.

When I had them on the phone on Tuesday evening they were having dinner outside and I asked what Bounty was doing and the husband replied that he was playing with a ball with the children.  Can't quite make it out as the husband really wanted to keep him and was quite distressed about bringing him back.

So, still looking for the right home for Bounty.

'He had chased the cats a bit outdoors and made their little boy fall down while playing.'

......So he was being a fairly typical lab puppy and Madame obviously has no concept of what they are like. It makes me so cross that people don't realise what they are taking on when they decide to get a  particular type of dog.[:@] I would love to be able to offer Bounty a home but we already have 3 labradors, one of which is only 14 months old, and can't really cope with any more.[:-))]

Not only labs; all young dogs do this surely.   As Rob Roy says, it seems ridiculous that anyone takes on a young dog and doesn't expect this type of behaviour.

Sadly I can't help as we have enough of a handful with our young (very excitable) dog, but he looks so gorgeous I can't believe he won't be re-homed soon.

  • 8 months later...

Well it looks as if Bounty teenager has found his home with a really nice family in the Vienne.

              Ready to go

to eat all the food put out for the birds in his new garden.  He has also since eaten the family's cheddar cheese !

              He's a bit of a greedy one.
