Campaign to save cull of Romanian Street dogs

Following the tragic death of a 4 year old boy who went missing in a park while out with his grandmother. The boy was found outside the park in a fenced area. The Romanian authorities have started to collect street dogs and some unsuspecting pets some 60,000 to be culled. Gangs are also on the back off this campaign killing dogs and cats on the streets. I appreciate this is not a French thing but if you feel concerned write to your local MEP  see attached for campaign info

[quote user="NormanH"]There is a real problem with packs of Romanian dogs even in places such as Bucuresti.

The last time I was there a Japanese tourist had just been bitten and died from his wounds.

There is an article about the problem here:

Every year in France people are killed  by dogs. One last year outside our local supermarket but we would never dream of such a cull.  Charities have started a steralisation campaign in Romania and rehoming as well. Probably some do need to be put down but whats happenning is horrific and cruel.

But not by packs of wild or feral street dogs though.

Were that to be the case in France I am pretty sure the response would be the same yet France has far more means to tackle such a problem than Romania.

But then I suppose that I am biased having had to sleep many a night in a town square after a bus arrived in the small hours with only my bivvi bag for protection from the packs of dogs, it was always far more dangerous than sleeping out in the wild. I was also bitten a few times in the day, usually at the back of the knee when confronted by a pack and an older wiser one crept up behind.

Packs of dogs are dangerous and do need to be controlled.  Provided the dogs are put down humanely then that is probably the best solution both from the safety point of view and indeed for the dog. IMO it is no life for a dog to be kept in close confinement for many years. Dogs need a loving home and a proper chance for exercise and other stimulation. Feral dogs often do not make the best pets and may not be suitable for rehoming.

Chile could perhaps be a good example for other countries to follow, I dont know exactly what they do but I was told in Bolivia that I would really see a startling difference in the feral dogs once I crossed the border and it was very true.

Firstly they all seemed to be sought after pedigree breeds, the absence of mongrels and puppies makes me think that they were routinely sterilised, they were all in quite good condition some showing signs of recent attention, shaved limbs, bandages etc, they were not frightened of man and were treated well by the populace, given food and not tormented etc.

They did not act like feral dogs, more like a group of dogs in the park and hence it was safe to sleep out in the public spaces.

[quote user="Salty Sam"]Before signing up for PETA's latest campaign, it might worth considering PETA has one of the worst records for destroying healthy animals -

That's made me change my mind about signing the petition.

If you do not care for Peta, there are plenty of other pétitions to sign.  There have been démonstrations all over Europe to try to stop the massacre.

Tonight there sits a country of Europe where the moon drips with blood and the sun has turned black. At the edge of Europe. At the edge of civilization. At the edge of sanity!

If anyone has the stomach to watch this video of a little pup sprayed with petrol and burnt alive they will see the methods used and what they are capable of

It has been said that it could have been a pédophile who murdered poor little Ionut and dogs were blamed.  They have now brought out a video of Ionut unattended in the park with his brother

We now have several seniors from Bucharest, all sweet, gentle dogs after what they have been through.

Here is a very good film which explains the situation and the problem, with at the end some beautiful success stories on how the problem should be tackled, with sterilisation and respect for life.

Thanks Christine. I have signed. As you say if people object to my petition yours is even better as its directed at the EU parliament.  As well as stopping the state sanctioned programme we need to stop the hundreds of dogs that are being beaten, beheaded and burnt alive in the streets of the Romanian capital by gangs.
