We are still doing our research before taking the plunge and moving to France full time.  We haven't yet decided on an area. Basically, we are looking for an area that isn't too wet in the winter, (don't mind a little cold if it's sunnier than UK).  The Provence area doesn't really appeal as the summers are scorching and we aren't keen on the scrubby landscape.  Dordogne is apparantly very wet in the winter.  We are retired and want a little land for horses etc, so don't want clay soil.  Are we looking for the impossible? Any suggestions?

Try the N Lot (we are in 461**)

Heavier rainfall than Essex but far less frequently keeps the grass green even in 2003. As a former horse/pony owner I appreciate that no rain = no grass.

Good soil but watch for occasional clay patches

Summers hot, autumn mild, spring mixed, winters cold (-10 this yr) but not for long. Though both last yr and this it dragged on and on.

Try the Limousin. The winters tend to be cold and crisp rather than cold and damp as in the UK. We were still sitting in the garden enjoying the sun on some days in December last year. Winter came in with a bang in January and we had a lot of snow but the neighbours say it's unusual to have that much snow. A bit wet in May but the summers tend to be hot but not too oppresive as in the south. The soil is good here if my veg patch is anything to go by Property prices still seem reasonable although it's getting quite popular so that might change in time.
