Registering a Polish car in France?

Although have never had the experience, I understand that registering a say UK or German car in France is straight forward?

Providing the log book is present is there a problem with a Polish registered car, are they all treated the same?

The vehicles we are looking at are Polski Fiat (FSM).

I cannot see that the process is any different. Depending on age of car first hurdle may be getting a European Certificate of Conformity. Only good news is that I believe the factory is still in existance and making Ford Kas and Fiat 500s

The seller of one of these vehicles has just told me that in the UK the documents required for registration are a valid MoT, insurance and original log book only.

Is it different for France as it's all EEU?

Your seller either has no idea of what is required for importing a car into the UK or he is setting you up for a patsy.

The process for importing a Polish registered car into France is the same as importing a UK registered car.

PS:  I'm assuming that we're talking about a modern EU compliant car and not some old Polish banger......[;-)]

I don't intend to be a patsy that's why I am asking...

The cars I am looking at are 1985 - 1990, so pre Poland and the EU. Will that make a difference and if so does that apply to any vehicle from a current EU country that was built before EU entry ?

Not so much, generally hundreds of pounds, but that's the financial value only.

Cars that old do not comply with EU type approval, so they have to have French national type approval in order to be registered in France.  If the particular models were officially imported for commercial sale in France then the importer will have obtained that approval at the time.  If not, then you'll have to submit the cars for a single vehicle approval inspection. 

FSM were acquired by Fiat some eighteen years ago and it's not unknown for original homologation records for obsolete vehicles to become lost in the process.  Unless these cars are something really special, then you may prefer not to have the hassle and expense.

Thanks to all for opinions and details, I will further check whether there is French type approval for the car model I am interested in. I think that if it doesn't exist I'll leave well alone, but as part of my interest is in air cooled engines I will pursue this as far as is practical.
