Self-employed

It depends what you do, the nature of any contracts or agreements, and probably how much you earn. There are some jobs, like self-employed estate agent, where you have to work for just one principal. Also some employees are, reportedly, being forced to go self-employed under the autoentrepreneur status in order to reduce costs and paperwork for small employers. If you want an answer tailored to your situation, you should ask at the tax office or URSSAF, but don't expect a sensible or accurate response.

Certainly "work for someone" and "self employed" don't actually go together. You either work for someone and are salaried (master/servant relationship) or you are self employed and have clients who you do work for.

You can be self employed with one client for ever, if this client gives you enough work to make a living.
