Vicks
Can anyone give us any advice on regulations regarding smoke alarms? Are they a legal obligation here and if so what are the must dos and donts? I tried discussing this with our neighbours but they seem to think we are mad for even asking! Apparently no-one has them here and you certainly don't have to install them! Any confirmation of this much appreciated!Vicks (58)
Racerbear02
Yes seems to be true, some guys working at our place were fascinated by ours, they thought it was a very good idea and wanted to know where to get them, I bought ours in UK
Hindhaugh
Seems such a common sense item to me and available anywhere here in the UK, in fact some area's even give them away free from the local fire station.
Teamedup
My answer to 'what are they then?!!'.............. are, very very expensive here. You can buy them at Castorama, but I bring them back and I've brought them for friends and neighbours. Never heard of any rules about them in households though I suppose there will be in public places, perhaps.
Catalpa
so many houses have open fires in France... which requently smoke... perhaps they've been considered more irritating than useful? We'll definitely install them... when we graduate from two room living.Carole
zeb
Are carbon monoxide detectors also available in France?regards......helen
Jackie
Yes we brought three smoke alarms over from the UK. The one near the kitchen makes a good burnt toast and grilled chop or bacon detector!....................John (Flapping a tea towel) in Dept

0Helen
We also have installed smoke detectors in our French house. They are much more expensive in France so we brought ours from the UK. We are about to install carbon monoxide detectors too. We bought one for our son when he went to uni and had to live in student accommodation - this was for our peace of mind - he thought we were over reacting till he saw the sort of accommodation offered to students. I have seen these in Castorama in Limoges but did not take much note at the time of the price. Has anyone done a recent price comparison on cm detectors? tel
Hi,Click on the link below for all the information you need when considering purchasing a smoke alarm. It is a comprehensive guide on the type available in the UK. I took UK bought alarms to France as the smoke alarms were quite expensive there.http://www.manchesterfire.gov.uk/fire_safety/home/smoke_alarms.asp?id7=1&id8=8&id13=
