Pine wanted

We are a couple of days away from moving over to our new house in France.

I've been trying to establish whether it is better to buy pine in the UK and transport it or whether it would not be worth the trouble if prices are not much different. I've seen lots of yards selling what appears to be oak (we will be in 24) but have not noticed pine so perhaps we would be looking at a buildings supply?

We want to build a range of pine bookshelves covering a whole wall so I'm looking at quite a large amount.  Can anyone give me an approximate price for pine shelving, lengths of something like 1" thick by 9" or 10" deep so I can compare please?  Or, better still, is reclaimed pine available very often?

Pine and oak are plentiful in SW France, though the pine is mostly lambris or pine cladding. Eddie has made bookshelves out of this. I think most of the pine comes from the Landes which is almost nothing else but pine forests. We have a woodyard here where the owner works in the Landes during the week and at weekends prepares the wood for sale in various forms. Lambris is not expensive - depends on the quality, as far as I remember 10 to 20 euros for a pack of 10 lengths of 2m. from builders merchants. Thicker stuff will be dearer (?)

Why should it be a windup?  I bet I could think of something a little more interesting than the cost of pine boards if that was my intention!

Thanks for the info Patf.  That's the sort of thing I needed to know.  We'll go to one of woodyards and see if they can cut us some to order.

I think people (myself included) thought it was a wind-up because France has wood available.  Its a civilised country and you can generally get most things.  One thing that often surprises people who live in France is how hard some people moving here find it to give-up the UK - and they want to bring everything with them.  Sort of "Should I bring my washing up liquid from the UK " (either because they are unsure if you can but it in France or it might be a bit expensive ...).

Whilst I was not the one who raised the "Is this a wind-up" question, I had assumed it actually was.  Sorry.

Thanks Deimos.  We are actually moving to France after 6 years in Spain so I don't think I will be too troubled with assuming that civilization ends at Portsmouth.

I didn't doubt that pine would be available but as we are bringing a trailer from the UK and have the room if we needed to carry anything I just wondered if it would be false economy to buy a large quantity in the UK.  Certainly wood is far more expensive in Spain than in the UK so perhaps it would not have seemed such a strange question on a Spanish forum...
OK, I give up.  If it is so hard to comprehend why I asked the question this is obviously not the forum for me.  I'll find myself another one where contributors aren't so bloody-minded.  Enjoy!
Hi Graye, I thought your original posting was sincere and I hope you stay with the forum . I did not understand the two posts that were negative as , I am aware decent sized dressed pine is not available at French builders merchants and brico stores .

Kind regards,

Leo

Not negative, just that I made the same assumptions as others.  You so often see people wanting to bring out cement, paint, plasterboard, sand, etc., etc. from the UK - like they are assuming France is so backward such things don't exist.  I thus made an assumption that this was the same type of question.  You can buy stuff in France.  Nothing negative, but if people cannot tollerate a couple of incorrect assumptions them maybe the right forum has not yet been invented.

Seems weird to walk out of a forum over such a trivial issue - but then it takes all sorts.

Thank you for your kind comments Leo and also Deimos (I was not directing my remarks about bloody-mindedness at you, you were very helpful and have been previously when I asked another question).  I am not a delicate little feminine flower but I do have better things to do than justify myself every time I use the forum.  My prime objection, after apparently clearing up why I asked about pine in the first place, was to the ill thought out one-liner from someone who will apparently be quite a near neighbour of mine.  And it does seems from Leo's reply that my question was not as stupid as has been inferred.

We rented in the Dordogne for seven months from September last year and will be arriving back in the Dordogne to spend at least 50% of our time there in our own home.  I have asked 4 questions on this forum over the last 12 months, all of them perfectly genuine.  On two of those occasions I have received "smart Alec" pompous replies.  I do not particularly like cliquish forums where it is apparently appropriate to swap dozens of inane one-liners and "in" jokes but people with genuine questions are made to defend themselves.  I suppose it is the classic case of different personas coming out from behind the safety of an anonymous PC.  There ARE other forums out there and I suspect I will be far less apprehensive about asking a question on one of those just in case it is treated with mockery.  Or have I just been unlucky enough to encounter all your contributors who have nothing to say?

Don't leave us just yet Graye.  Recently there has been a rash of rather dubious questions posted, some of which were without doubt wind-ups.  It pleases some people to post daft questions on forums, and then laugh elsewhere about the gullibility of forum members.  Sad I know, but there you go, it takes all sorts.  It does leave people with suspicions about the intentions of some posters.  You were just unlucky to be caught up in it.

Graye:

Without doubt, this is the premier forum on France. There are many members with copious knowledge of things France, from Legal, through Finance, through Health to houses! Pausing en route for dogs, cats, goats, cars, boats and cordon bleu cuisine!

Indeed, compared to some of the others which vary from inane to puerile the level of "Real" knowledge on this forum is without compare.

Now that has an inevitable downside: from time-to-time, people sort of drift in from other fora which seem to specialise in either complaining about the lack of cheddar cheese and packet gravy and Tesco stores ( [:P]) or have reams of posts about getting their illegal UK satellites to work, through to endless discourse about football and soap operas!

These people then proceed to ask dumb questions like, "So why Can't I use UK sockets and plugs and a ring main and a UK consumer unit to rewire my 17th siecle chateau then? I can get the kit up B & Q's on special offer this week!"

It can become a might taxing on the patience of those who for nothing and no reward, freely give of their extremely significant hands-on knowledge to assist other members!

And then we do have the odd wind up from trolls!

Give us a try!

Pretty please? [kiss]

Gluey, I have never seen you blowing kisses before.  Are you flirting?

Hi Graye, it is a shame that you feel the way you do about this forum.  Personally, I read the wind up question as being quite tongue in cheek with no malice. I hope you stay too. [:)]

Come to think of it, I had a bit of a ribbing when I first joined the forum. [blink]

Katie I remember you first joining - you came up with all kinds of ideas for earning a living and got a bit of flak. Right I'm plodding on, taking no notice of intervening remarks, about wood. Looked in Gedimat today and saw lots of shelving made of "bois du Nord", as well as pin des Landes. So what is bois du Nord?  A piece 2.5mby 50cm by 25mm for 25e.

Probably, Katie. It's been a funny day..........................(Gluey exits stage right as brass band music plays).

Yes, Pat; I've seen and bought oodles of what I assumed was pine at Brico Depot.

Looks like pine; planes like pine: smells like pine; and the gum that oozes out smells like pine resin, too. Warps like pine as well!

However, it's obviously summat else! [:D]

OK, having done a steady trawl through the Leroy Merlin and Gedamet sites and seen how cheap it appears to be then it probably WAS a daft question!  Oh well, loads of room in the trailer for baked beans and HP sauce now I suppose.  And I AM joking, before anyone else dives in to tell me off!
